Hi
I have been having trouble with my old XL12 and intend to slab saw a couple of red oak logs for lumber with a homemade Alaskan Mill.
I went to my saw shop and they had a fairly new (orange) 540 Dolmar that has good compression and a strong engine. I purchased it and put a 20" bar with full chisel chain.
1. I would like to know how well this saw will hold up , I am fairly confidant of the saw but would like some input in regards to what to expect with it as opposed to a Husky , Josnred ect in regards to using it as a mill.
2. Are there problems specific to this saw ?
3. Where to get a pdf manual that will apply to this specific saw
Hopefully I'm not asking too much
Thanks

The 540 is a downrated version of an old design (115), but I don't think it is a bad saw......

...just a bit heavy for its power, and not the best anti-vibe and air filter system.

I believe I witnessed a 541 blue version

At the Indiana GTG. Owned by Luke. That was a mean mean little saw. But it was far from stock too. And with that being said I doubt it would do much mounted to a milling bar all day long. But it was fun to watch cut wood.

Thanks guys, my am just going to mill 2 approx 8' logs after that , some firewood cutting the one log is big larger than the bar ,understandably i'll have to make a second pass .

Blue 540

I have actually used mine some to rip tough to split firewood, somewhat similar to milling. I agree w computer user, I think you will be dissapointed if your wood is of any size. If you have it "Neigerized" it will be a totally different saw with greatly increased acceleration, torque, and much more rpm in the cut, but from what I saw at the IN GTG, you need cubic inches for milling! If you try to mill with it let us know how it works out.

Thanks for the input Luke , sounds like i'm going to be the Guinea pig .
My Uncle has a 026 Sthil and has produced a lot of lumber it . He has enough hard wood to keep him busy for quite a while .
My thoughts were that the PS540 is a slightly bigger saw , I realize it's not 390 with a 24' bar or bigger , sure it won't hog out the wood as fast , but it's about the best I can do on my budget .
I will keep you posted , If the conditions are right , tomorrow I will slab out a small ash log.
Hoping not to get a Ash kicking
