This is my second post, great site! I've got 5 wooded acres and need a new saw. I've got an older Sachs Dolmar 112 saw that I'm rebuilding after an unfortunate incident. I would like a larger saw. I really like the dolmar line but there are no dealers nearby. Given reliability of todays saws, is this an issue? If it is dolmar, which models would be advised? Any dealer suggestions on east coast?

I understand, in a 50 CC or larger, you might want to look at the Husk 346XP, a Dolmar PS5100, which I've heard is faster than the 346. without one of each in stock form to test here, I dont know for sure.

I'd be inclined to go either the 5100 or the 7900 route, depending on exactly what you are planning on cutting. If you can get away with a sub-20" bar, the 5100 would probalby meet your needs and, from what I hear, be fun to use as well. If you anticipate spending most of your time running a 20"+ bar, then the 7900 might be a better choice. Either way, I suspect you will be quite content with your purchase.

Although I only cut recreationally, a few days a month, I finally gave in and picked up a 7900 from TonyM (a sponsor on this board) a few months back. The saw has been a pleasure to use - powerful and very light for its power, with excellent anti-vibe. Everybody who has used it has been impressed. And the price was great, too. The only drawback is that I don't get to spend as much time cutting as I did before, because it is so much faster than the saws I had been using. I highly recommend it.

In any case, you should talk with TonyM.

if it is a 50cc saw you want then buy a 5100s but if you think you need more power then buy a 7900

Assuming you get your 112 going, look for a 359 Husky, or preferably a PS 6400 Dolmar. It and the 7300 all have the same chassis as the 7900, so weigh the same, but cost less.

on this forum, TonyM and 166 are dealers, search for them and give them a shout.

Local dealer support is not a major stumbling block, imo, if you take care of your equipment and are handy with minor repairs.

Go for the PS 5100,the hot ticket right now in the Dolmar line.EHP says that she got more torque than a 346.

I`ll second that. I got to run the nearly brand new(not broken in) 5100 that Eric Bieber brought to the GTG and it has loads of torque and it revs too!

The 346xp is 45 cc, not "50 cc or larger"........ :alien:

Mostly hardwood. 50cc or larger, not that I need it - just a guy thing!
If that is the case it is mostly a question of how much money you are willing to spend. :blob2:

The 5100 is probably the best option among the 3 cube saws, but there could easily be more fun for a little more money if your wood is big enough to tell the difference.

How big are your wood, average and maximum?

How much money are you willing to spend?

How big an issue is the weight of the saw?

If the answers to these questions fit in, I am tempted to suggest that you just for the hell of it :blob5: , get the Husky 372xp before it disappears from the market, and have it modified by one of reputed saw modifiers that sponsor this site.

Anybody ever wonder why there is a $170 hike on the MSRP between the 6400 and 7900 when the list price on the cyl & piston kit is only about $36 dollars more for the bigger saw?

...ever wonder why there is a $170 hike on the MSRP...?

Why was the 272Xp usually $150 (or more) above the 61?

The short answer is because they could get it. The 61 was seen as the plain-jane baseline model, not appealing to the folks that wanted to get the max power, speed, and production in the woods (although the 61 cost well over $500 when it first came out, but quickly won lots of converts from Homie and McC).

I have a 6400 that I really like and use it about the same as you descrbed
your work load
Would anybody build/sell a modded muffler for me?
What would be a good price for this?
Thanks
