Has anyone seen a 540?? I think it ran off with a 7900 that was sitting next to it. This could be bad??? We could end up with 7954's in the months to come.....

Later,
Chris

thanks!

That was a neat article to read but I think the cutting times probably need to be taken with a grain of salt as they said they used the chain that was supplied with the unit. I am also surprised at the differences in stated vs real? power output. That new dolmar 5000 is one ugly sob! Kind of looks like an old echo. Great specs though and it seems rated well (was this really an unbiased test?). To be fair, I thought the 6400, 7300, and 7900 were ugly too but dont mind them now.

Well to steal a line from an old english car manufacturer add, "It is the shape of things to come". One thing for sure there is no confusion about who makes this new design as it is not a look-alike.

Terry, The "Dolmar' name on the side of the saw makes it look BAD! It may as well say "Fisher Price" I wanted one until I was it, not so sure now. It had better be a STELLAR performer to overcome its looks. Feel free to pass my opinion on to the factory. If they can make the handle say "Dolmar" or "Makita" at will then surely they make a plain one for the U.S. market. Again the handle has to go! I was hoping the saw would look more like the 6400, 7300 , 7900 than the little joke PS34!

Looks

Driving down the X-way the other day I asked the War Dept. to tell me what make and model car passed us, She was able to recognize about three out of 100, all of them were old models. If you look at the small HUSKY, POULAN, JONSEREDS in black and white good luck telling them apart. There may be a few small differences but not many, and if you get inside there are none. As far as the PS 34 don't knock it until you have tried it, I have 8-10 out with older people and in the commercial market and they all love it. Sure it is a different looking saw but I can remember calling on dealers with a Husky G-65 and being laughed out of the store because it looked like a pumpkin, however after we went to the woodpile and it cut the rear end out of the vibrating box 041 Stihl it was a different ball game. We all know where Homelite and McCulloch went only because of the refusal to change.

The looks certainly won't keep me from buying one. It doesn't look any stranger than my 6401 that goes through a cord of firewood so quick I don't spend much time looking at it. As for the test, I would would like to see how it compares to the Solo 651 and the Efco 952.

540 Dolmar

I gotta say something cause my phone is ringging with questions, and I think this is the place to put it. The Dolmar 540 that Dan has I have ran on two occasions. The first time (if it was the same exact saw) was brand new shinny Black and orange stick. It ran but you could tell the saw could not perform because of variuos restrictions. Besides I don't think the factory chain performed..... its factory not performance. And anybody who knows me knows I like performance.
Now Dan ported a 540 for the Boss and me to try out. It runs good real good. I would say that in an 8x8 if a 357 was not run right the 540 would be there to take its place. Now I will comment that Gretchen had a chain built special for her (from Copsey Race Chains) to run for her small stock saw. That is the chain we put on the saw and ran. Now I did spend sometime tuning the saw and doing some very fine adjustments. When the saw left here it was faster than when it showed up.
Now there are some issues I do and don't like about the saw. I like the smothness, lightness and feel in the cut and the saw has an easy feel to adjust too. I don't like that you need to cut a driver out of the chain to get it to fit right and I couldn't experiment with an 8 pin sprocket.
Remeber, I am looking at this saw from a racing point of view not a lets go cut some 18" oak point of view. If I did get one for the wood pile or for a liming saw I would port that muffler, richen it up a bit and run good 94 octaine fuel (+ a sharp work chain). For the a 54cc saw you can't beat the price for what you get. And I even think there cheeper to buy than the 029's (Sorry sthiltech).

Chris

im wondering, you folks who are concerned with the looks of your saws, do you also do your hair before going into the woods?

I think Jessy James summed it up when he did an interview about his cars and bikes and said, "I don't want anything pu$$y looking"

Sedanman,

Just do me one favor, dont be so quick to just and really judging from looks alone. I am surprised. I truly believe once you try it you will like. Cause you see from your point of view when you are operating the saw the major item you dislike you will not see. I have run this saw and NOT speaking from an operating experts point of view, I still have to say that this saw is a performer and am confident you will say the same if you give one chance to prove its worth.

Another old saying from Cave Man Engineering School.
A hole dweller who made it to class asked, "Why a round wheel?"
Professor replied, "Form follows function".
Modern English translation, "There's a method to their madness".

Going back over the very beginning of the Dolmar posts on the 'Bubble Sawas" alot of comment was made about the shape.
As we've come to learn, the why's & therefore's, it's easy to see that there is nothing less than a lot well designed functionally in what Dolmar has done over the 75+ years in business.

The "Shape of things to come" (PS5000) will only be a concern of the competitive saw makers, and those who don't buy one.

A big boat takes alot of room to manuver and turn.
A smaller one is much more responsive, and can easily change.

Dolmar, while a much smaller boat than the two major players, has certainly been responding....not...to the big box - no service stores, or a bunch of money hungry stock holders, or making some price point- dumbed down- cheapened model, but................

1st...... to what users.....Want & Need,
2nd....not far behind but definately tied into the 1st is the Human, and Enviromental sides.
Cleaner engines, better sound quality, lower vibration levels, superior ergonomics, even lower fuel consumption.
All help us work better, live better, and maybe even longer thru the usage of better tools.

However, did take me some getting used to the handle shape, and big DOLMAR name on the homeowner PS34, but it certainly stands out, kinda like bragging.
Maybe that's was Dolmar's point on the PS5000

Redpowered, If I let you choose between 2 trucks of comparable quality and one of them was black and the other hot pink which would you choose? Looks do matter somewhat wouldn't you agree?

Sedanman makes an excellent point. If Dolmar plans to market a pink 5000, they should reconsider.

Don't forget the difference in performance

Hi sedanman,

what will be your choose, if the pink truck is able to transport double load????

If the pink truck was twice as capable as the black one it WOULD be tempting. I will have to get one of those PS5000"s in my hands as soon as they are in stock. I have had more than a few people ask "What in the world is THAT thing?" when looking at my 7900. They usually want one once I put them at the controls. FOr waht it's worth, I don't think we're talking about the PS5000 as being TWICE the saw as its competitors. It may have risen to the top in that one shootout, but no one suggested by what multiple. Follow the story here of the PS7900, one member got a used one then praised it openly on this forum, many then took a look at a saw they would otherwise not have conscidered. Word of mouth sold a bunch of these saws. I have never seen a print or television ad for Dolmar. The PS500 looks a little like the battery operated toy chainsaws you can get in a toy store, this makes the job being taken seriously a bit tougher.
