I caught that too and was gonna suggest they ask you about how that works out!
With my pesticide PTSD, that was the first thing I thought of with the limb dieback.
But after scrutinizing the photos, I pretty much ruled that out. Although, not entirely.

Are you spraying anything on your yard? (Or previous owners may have been). Could be getting some herbicide through the roots which would explain why the ones with more surface roots look worse.

I haven't used any chemicals around the house or yard. Previous owners may have but I don't think so as they were plant lovers and had plants all around the house in addition to a greenhouse and small garden. I have grape vines as well but the fruit keeps getting eaten by animals and the few I tried were not very sweet.

What do the leaves on your grapevine look like? If they aren't damaged, then likelihood of pesticide in the air (drift/gassing off) is unlikely.

Leaves look normal. I have to cut the vines back from the dog fence every year.

And I guess this year I'll need to fix the broken railing that the previous owners used as support for the grapes.

Nah - gives the fence character! Beautiful. Love the clematis (?).
