they are used 2 measure forces in rigging. does any 1 know where to get 1 and hom much money i should expect 2 pay?

Hawking ebay; many weight ranges, dial, digital, motor cycle, twist etc. but you can get about the cheapest non-hand class. Still have ranges from 1-100k, should get by on pull dynamometer for about $70 - 250 depending on range needed i think. Maybe not everyday; but watching waiting for right one for a month or so(?).

Dillon and Chatalon (sp) are the big stateside manufacturers of Tensile Dynos. I calibrate them occasionally and think the Chatalons are better. I WOULD NOT purchase a used dyno without knowing how it was utilized and how accurate it is! a quality calibration is nearly as expensive as a new dyno. A good calibration is done with a standard that is no more than 3 steps removed from NIST. Many agencies today have a standard that was calibrated in Fred's Garage with a standard that gets traced through numerous standards to something that was last calibrated by NBS.

Most tensile test equipment is rated at ± 1% of reading.
Dillons were rated at ± 1% of full scale, a 10K dyno can be 100 lbf (pounds force) in error at 500 lbf and be within tolerance. I suggest you buy something where 75% of full scale is what you expect to measure.

These can get very expensive. What are you trying to measure?

We have companies here that test the breaking strength of anchor cables and ropes. REI tests climbing ropes for strength and wear resistance. The University of Washington has a 2.4 million lbf universal test machine that I helped calibrate. It is 5 stories tall and looks like a tower on a suspension bridge.

Best just to hire one from your local industrial hire equipment place. Hire it out for a day or two and do your testing. Cheaper.

Where exactly can we hire one from?

Coates or kennards hire in Australia. Ask for a load cell or dynamometer, same thing. $50+ for a day hire of a 5 tonne unit. Good also to measure load between trunks when installing cable and bracing systems so the right diameter wire or cobra is used.
