The Nati, Oh Hi, Yo
Trying to decide on a motorcycle ride in the country or take the wife out to the lake and boom....emergency call.

No wind or storm and they got a huge tree size limb buried in their roof. Sold the job called my crane sub and now I can get a little delayed escape.

I have the same problem today, sorta. I was either gonna go ride the Motorcycle to the park and take a little hike, or do a little much needed tree work around my house. Since I'm already dirty from cutting the lawn and want to try out my new rope (on a 20' pear tree :greenchainsaw:) I guess I'll clean up my trees.

Your alternatives look a whole heck of a lot harder and complex. The house got tore up pretty good. Good luck and try not to work too hard.

wow. summer limb drop at its finest.

you going to be running a saw in the house or you just going to try and pull it out seeing as how there is now a gaping hole in the roof?

sounds like they called the right man for the job. good luck with that one!

Thanks both you guys. We'll hit it tomorrow. I pulled out a couple of hangers with throw line to make safe and it is all routine stuff later. I have refused to interior prune the nbor's tree for years as this was destined to happen. It was loaded with foliage and biggest crop of acorns I have ever seen too. Big pocket of decay, coulda used a cable or two. They didn't want to listen to me or pay my prices.

Oh well, they got away with it after all. Not the HO that got hit tho. Brand new addition and total new roof. They said it rained acorns for a little while this morning, had an unGodly creak then....sounded like an atomic bomb. Hit on the peak and slid, base and all, about 15 feet sideways and settled between 2 peaks. Nobody got hurt.

I love Sunday emergency Jobs ! I had one today also ! There gonna cost ya a little extra!

looks like it could be good sales pics for pruning/thining, cabling and removals all rapped up in one. Hold on to them and make them work for you.

How someone can own a liability like that and not address it; sheer negligence if they knew. :buttkick: if you really wanted to get ratty you could show the victim your proposal for cabling with the need stated clearly and they (or their ins' loyyer) could have a field day.

Not that you would ever want to get ratty though.

The Limb did not drop off; it tore off and fell down. Therefore, it is not SLD summer limb drop. It is actually known acronymically heretofore as CTO, codominant tearout.

SLD occurs at asymptomatic sites--where there are no previous defects.

What happens to the tree after cleanup?

The leader is bye bye now. Picked off the canopy with crane and 75 foot Teco.
I then had the crane op (one of the 3 best in Cincinnati) stand the piece up as it was way to heavy to boom over the house. I slabbed off 8 or ten meaty pieces as it was cabled down each time, then, as in pict., it was boomed over house.

It did a lot of damage to what you cannot see in this pict....a $200,000.00 addition. Nothing structural as it was brand new on the is 85 year old house and very well constructed to take a blow like this.

The homeowner came by and casually tried to get me to concur that this was all just happenstance. I was having none of it and as she had just had a crew spike all over while deadwooding the tree and doing "what is needed to make nbor's house safe". I told her the most dangerous limb fell off but if it was properly cabled it would still be up there.

I explained at length the condition this tree is currently in, ( I am not going in to those details) and she asked me for a bid on removal. I told her that I will also give a bid on remedial pruning and cabling but with absolutely no guarantee it will not fall apart again. Also suggested she talk to a few other well established CA's even tho she complained the guy she had last month was one. I told her the CA is a basic entry level of knowledge.

She has worries on her mind (kids in college she says) the neighbor has a patched up $200k addition and I have $5900. in my pocket. Another day another adventure.

Wow, 5900. for the day. You did well with skipping the bike ride.

One of the things I like about this biz is kinda playing sort of an arboreal superhero where you swoop in and fix somebody's catastrophe. It is irresistible. Profitable to.

What a shot!!....

right between the rafters! H.O. got lucky there. There could have been alot of structural repair if the limb broke some rafters. Looks like a little drywall, plywood, and comp. shingles and he's back in business.

good job man!

not that i like to see someone's house all banged up but its like a rivalry game and you get fired up to partake in it.

good pull for that effort. you throw a bone to the boys for the effort or was it business as usual? you spring for some iced coffee?

Thanks oldirty, just me and my gm. Crane op for a half day and gave him a tip. Will give my gm something on pay day. Haven't had iced coffee for a while but that sounds good.

Whose gonna get a 40 ton crane and a 75 foot picker at their house at 8 am on Monday morning after a tree falls on their house on a Sunday? Not do an ounce more damage in the removal with tree stuck in house. Nice comparison to neighbor who had a giant oak all spiked up and gaping omission of a cable putting giant leader on house. Obvious difference didn't get missed by either homeowner. One guy cheap and one guy not. Guess why.

Just a few months ago during the hurricane, same tree service gets called to local country club and took 3 days of constant loud swearing of help to get big oak out. Recommended by board member.

We came in few weeks later and removed a giant ash in one day, Polite, well dressed and mannered. My truck crane in the rough off fairway handled that one. Had greenskeeper turn the sprinklers off for a couple of days.

You did well. You came, you craned, you sawed and the kicker is that you also gave the advise to the tree owner to cable it. Phew, dude that is good, honest and plentiful doe you made there.

by the sounds of it one company is run by a hack and the other is a professional.

TreeVet was the $5900 for the whole tree or the limb? And did you see any tell tale signs in the tree that would lead you to believe that it was hollow?
