I bought an 044 off Ebay for $175 "buy it now". It was listed as "great compression". It arrives and has very little compression by hand, and 40# on the gauge. Open up muffler and a chunk missing from piston. What would you do? The seller had almost perfect feedback!

Ask for a refund. You will probably have to eat the shipping costs but you should definately get a refund because it is not as advertised. If the seller specifically said "sold as is" then you are out of luck. On the bright side, if you have another 044 then you'll have some parts.

If you want to part it out lemme know. John

AS IS

It said as is, BUT: I thought that is to cover the possiblity of; bad carb, ignition, brake, crank, etc, anything else other than piston and cylinder. The shipping was from Alaska to top things off, so I am hoping for a partial refund. The saw was pretty rough on the outside, If it was a like new saw, $175 would be ok for an 044 needing piston and cylinder, I guess.

As stated ask seller for refund since saw did not arrive as advertised. I would ask to reimburse shipping charge as well. You have option to give seller a negative feedback for transaction which is dreaded by anyone selling items. Of course the seller could then neg you back which would screw up your rating. $175 for a 044 with bad piston actually sounds like a good price on ebay. Part saws range $175. - $250. Look on ebay for a used piston & head for another $75 - $100 slap it on get it running. You can probably sell it back on ebay for over $300 and get your money back or keep it.

Refund

I was hoping that he would refund some money $80-$90 rather than paying postage. After all, I was mislead, I sure wouldn't buy it if I knew I was looking at a jug and piston. And the fact there was no bar and chain, and overall well used and rough overall condition. If anybody has a used jug and piston or has any leads please let me know!

As is means to me as he described the item, good compression. If the saw did not have good compression(looks like one dead 044 to me)he SHOULD NOT HAVE NOTED IT DID IN THE DESCRIPTION.

In other words he would have simply said"This saw will not start and selling as is for parts or repair."If you add more description concerning the condition it must be accurate, otherwise it's just bait to sell junk.

Hope it works out for you,
Rick

There is a ebay seller called CHEAPSTIHLPARTS that sells parted out saws. I have bought used parts from him and they are as advertised. Guy does not burn you up on shipping either. Type his name in the ebay search for sellers and go to his store. If he does not have one on site email him and it will usually show up for sale in week.
This one is up now.

Should get in touch with them.Send the pic of the piston, let them know that 40 lbs. is not good compression and what it
will take to make it right. If you want the saw ask for a partial refund. If you don't want the saw ask for a full refund. They should
be willing to work it out to your satisfaction. Most sellers do not
want negative feedback.

Used Piston and Jug

I agree, it is like saying a bar and chain is included in an "as is" saw, and the bar and chain not arriving with the saw, Well I bought it from Cheap Stihl Parts, seems fairly reasonable. Have not heard back from the seller yet. He is telling me he bought it from a friend who swears it ran well. I think if his refund covers my purchase, he could still be considered dilligent, and would be the best compromise for the both of us. Mike

if he wont give u all he money u got in it..
blister his but with negative feedback.. plus tell ever body u know his name and location. hes a thief.. unless he does do rite by u .. that still dont explain his good compression statement..i just think he was looking for a con..unless he just a pawn shop an dont know didley about saws ..in which case he should have stated that was the case. and still he owes u the full amt o money u got in it..
should be his los not yours .. hell learn to be careful with his wording on things..

I agree; He sells lots of saws and boat motors so I don't see how it felt like "great compression". He asked me if I tried to run it after I got it. I don't know what he was thinking, even if it would run, what would it prove, if the piston looks like that!

You can purchase a new piston and cylinder for that saw from Bailies for about $99USD or $483.57 Canadian. If the saw is in cood shape other than that.... I would ask for $50 back, buy a new cylinder assembly, and use it like you stole it. A good condition 044 on ebay sells for $300 and up.

I had a run-in with the same seller once, bought a parts 009 powerhead from him...he threw it in a box and it proceeded to leak bar oil everywhere, ruining the box and causing it to fall apart...the postal service had to re-box the item and put everything in plastic bags...they charged me as the recipient for the additional shipping costs...when I brought it up to the seller he got real nasty.

The seller seems to be taking his sweet time time getting back to me, but I guess I got to give him a chance. I guess with all the saws he sold, nobody told him about hanging the saw by the starter cord to test compression!

I am confused did someone list the seller of the 044 with the bad piston:confused:

The guys only got one negative out 1215 total feedbacks 809 of them unique, so he's getting repeat or multiple buying customers, he must be doing something right. It's probably an honest mistake. I'd try to work it out with him. You can do an information request through eBay and get his phone #. Maybe you can get enough out of him to fix it and save all the shipping hassles.
Grateful

Found it thanks. Description was misleading I hope seller make good on sale.

I thought you said you bought it from cheapstihlparts. Quote :"Well I bought it from Cheap Stihl Parts". I did a search it seems you bought it from someone else called: ak-grizz. The first stop sign with this guy is what he list as a location: Halibut Fishing Capitol of the World!!! That alone would have been enough for me, if you can't tell people honestly where you're at then it's bye-bye I'll go somewhere else. I looked at something he sold not long ago and it said "some surface rust", from the picture it's totally rust covered, not some rust.
Grateful

Just so anyone isn't confused cheapstihlparts isn't the guy who misrepresented the saw in question. Cheap stihl parts is also in Washington. Heck he's probably an AS member. I have bought parts from cheapstihlparts before and he is fair and fast. John
