eBay is full of BS shipping charges.

I shipped an 011 powerhead from Houston to a residence in NY via FdX ground, $10.85. I recently paid $15.00 shipping for an 011 piston & cylinder shipped to me from CT; the actual postage was $3.85, uninsured. Also, I believe (could be wrong) that both UPS & FdX automatically insure packages up to $100.00 even if they're sent ground. Shipping between the US & Canada gets a little more complicated; something about being less than honest about why an item is being shipped?

High shipping charges stink but at least the ones with fixed charges hold no surprises. I really don't kick about a few bucks over actually shipping on large items-packaging costs money and effort. WHat really burns me is a $15 shipping fee for a $4 actual shipping item that comes as an after auction surprise.

Those who have watched ebay for awhile remeber when "JustDavid" strted out he had exteme shipping. It seems he has went to high prices also. As for the 084 [arts he also has a used jug set that he wanted %50 for and a extreme high shipping charge.

The high shipping charge is a way to avoid paying fees to e-bay. The total amout of the auction including shipping is paid to the seller, Ebay charges their fee based on listing fees and final price the item sold for , they do not get any cut of the shipping fee. It's the same as owning a business and charging yourself rent. The money all goes in your pocket but because some of it is an expense to the business, it's not taxed as profit. The income stream created by collecting rent is not taxed as highly as business profit would be.

Insurance

Everytime I shipped to US or Canada, using Canada Post, they insure up to $100 cad included with the cost of shipping. It is only if the item is more than $100 cad do you have to buy additional insurance. I'd realy like to know if it works the same with USPS etc. It seems like a ripoff to have to pay $1.35 extra to insure a $15 item. I figure its fair to pay a little extra to pay for somebody's effort and materials but some guy really get carried away. Also don't like a piston and cylinder described as "great shape" with no closeup pictures, then the big "items sold as is" following.

You have to read the eBay descriptions

very carefully, & send the seller questions when in doubt. After a while I started recognizing some of the careful wording some sellers use. This morning I was reading a description that said the saw "turns." Doesn't say anything about the saw having compression. A lot of them rant & rave about an item, but actually give you very little useful information (like a used car saleman). One day auctions are a red flag. Poor quality photos are a red flag, but to be fair some folks have to make do with lousy cameras, & aren't good photographers.

Do a search here at AS using eBay; you'll find all kinds of stories, good & bad. I haven't given up on eBay, but I do research things pretty thoroughly before taking the plunge.
