I just purchased 40 acres of heavily timbered land mostly pine and oak. Went looking for a new chainsaw and found a Echo CS670 brand new. I know this model has been discontinued but the dealer is willing to let it go for $450.00. Just wandering what y'all think about the Echo line (this saw particularly)

I'd me more inclined to look at the CS-590 for $400 brand new, current model that isn't likely to be discontinued anytime soon (it's one of Echo's best sellers, lots of bang for the buck).
How big of stuff do you plan to cut, and how long of a bar do you need? Cutting firewood for yourself, or going all out into the firewood business?

We will be clearing for a homesite. Some good sized trees 20-30 inches

Yeah, the CS-590 with a 20" bar will do that. Get extra saw chains for it. You'll need sharpening tools, etc. but you probably already know that. Lots of other saws out there that will do the job, but that's the one I recommend the most to friends, relatives and clients... it's a lot of saw for the price. Starts easy, runs forever.

The newer generation echo saws are a much better product IMO. The 670 is a poor running 67cc saw, much better options whithin the echo lineup. The 590 (5series) and the new 6 series saws perform more like european saws than the older echoes. The 670 is fine build quality wise but the performance is bad for its displacement.

Thanks for the insight. I will look at both the 5 and 6 series. One quick question are those considered professional saws?

The CS-590 is a Farm/Ranch grade saw, but has the same engine as the CS-600 and CS-620 saws, which are professional grade. Not sure what the differences are. I use the CS-590 for cutting up wood on the ground, and I run a tree service. The CS-680 is a bigger saw, I have a friend in the firewood business who uses one for felling and bucking. Seems every bit the pro grade saw, and he swears by it.

IMO 'if' your cutting 20"-30" stands and that is what the saw will primarily be used for, 50&60cc saws are the wrong class to be looking at. 70-90cc saws is what you should be looking at. I would not touch a 30" piece of timber with anything less than 70cc's. lf that is what you really need a saw for l would look at a 7910 Dolmar, 390xp, 576xp, ms461, ms661 ect. But having said that people describe wood diameter in a similar way to the biggest fish they caught, so its hard to say.

...so its hard to say...

And, he wants to clear a homesite. I'm thinking you wouldn't want to get too much invested in a saw that might not get used again... but, yeah, if he's going to clear a bunch of it and burn wood from now on out, he's going to need two or three saws.

Echo cs600 and 620 are basically the same.
620 has an unlimited coil in it (no rev limiter)
Also has digital ignition. Probably some other differences also.
My 620pw "wrap handle" rips through wood easy with the stock 27" bar.
I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT.
Also they are both considered professional saws.

This is why I was considering the CS 670 w/27 inch bar. The dealer down south where I live has one that is brand new and offering it up at $450.00.

From another post on here about that saw...

"Had to swap out carbs on 3 of these 670`s, no amount of cleaning would cure them."

That might be the reason Echo stopped production on the saw, and why your dealer wants to sell it cheap.

We're trying to tell the OP that the 670 is a lemon and will be so at any price. If saving money is the key objective and you want a quality saw with good performance perhaps look at a good known model second hand from a respectable member. Cash on the used market is king at the moment, $450 will put a top saw in your hands if you spend it wisely.
