The Canadian egg supply is very different than the states. We have alot of small producers spread out in all of our province's. Eggs around here are usually $3 a dozen or 2 for $5.

Wild infected birds are down south right now. Our bird flu usually happens in spring time.

I paid about $4.50 for a dozen jumbo's at Walmart.

I just got home from Walmart.
Checked the egg situation and when I commented to another lady on 3/4 of the case being empty, she said she never thought she'd ever pay $20 for two dozen eggs.
We both thought it was VERY suspicious that they were well stocked with the overpriced Walmart eggs, but all out of all the other brands like Eggland's Best, the brown, and the free-range eggs.
I still have some so I'm good.

I just called my Walmart and asked about the eggs. The lady said all they have are the Great Value brand and they're $5.48/dozen.
So, apparently the lady I talked to in the store who said "$20 for two dozen eggs" was hallucinating.

I think the price depends on the location and how affected the suppliers are by the bird flu. You got to remember Walmart has suppliers all over the country, some may be affected more than others, those less affected may not be able to supply eggs outside their area. If Walmart has to buy eggs outside of it's suppliers they are going to have to pay market price of that area.

May not get affected that much because it's a frozen product and can be distributed country wide.

Depending on the weather, they will do that. I don't get worked up if our girls don't produce much if we get a sudden weather change.

While I've been curious if (meat) chicken prices are going to go way up, i half doubt it since it's two different types of birds, not typically held at the same facilities.

We have in the past. We currently don't. We get so many we're never in short supply, even being down to 17 birds. Just give them away.

fryers are ready in 9 weeks, layers take much longer so the meat birds will respond much quicker.

Amish neighbor down the road, just raises their prices on eggs from $2.50 a dozen to 3.00 . Capitalism rears its ugly head. It’s been unseasonably cold here , guess the chickens slow down production in protest, feed has gone up too . I’ll pick up a bag of feed or 2 when I’m in town, just to stay on their good side.

I promise you they aren't making much if any at that price. Making money off of eggs with a small flock is a fallacy.

My small flock of 7 ducks completely stops production in the winter. They just suck up the feed and make a bunch of noise.

Ducks are kinda worth the extra trouble though. Their eggs are considerably better eating than hen's eggs, in my opinion. The yolks are considerably bigger with less "white". A couple of the ducks produce some huge eggs, also. They are so big that any recipe calling for eggs needs to be adjusted accordingly.

Just kidding about the capitalism, I’m sure they are just breaking even, but it just goes to show the mark up on store bought eggs , many hands involved in the process and overhead.

I love duck eggs, rich and creamy, not many places for sale around me , I buy them when ever I can .

Good point! They taste better, too.
It doesn't hurt that my ducks are also "free range". They have the run of the entire back yard, and eat every bug they can find.

I'd agree that duck eggs are better. But not worth the mess IMO. They tore up the bank of my pond. Crap everywhere. When it came to winter and they wanted to be indoors they made one hell of a mess out of the coop. You can't keep drinking water within their reach. Lay their eggs on the ground wherever they feel like. It was an Easter egg hunt daily trying to track them down. Hens are alot easier to deal with.

Yep! That's a remarkably accurate assessment of my ducks. Except mine seem to be quite content to stay outside the coop unless it is bitterly cold.
