I just installed an Elastostart rope system on my 038 super. It was fairly straight forward and well worth the effort. Here is how I did it.

1. Remove the screws holding the starter assembly onto the body of the saw. On the 038 there are (3) screws. Two below and one on the handle.

2. Remove the starter assembly from the saw.

3. Pull the starter rope enough so that you can unloop at least two loops from the pulley while holding the pulley to release tension from the pulley. If you don't do this, you could pull the tensioning spring apart when removing the pulley. Don't ask how I know this.

4. Remove the circlip, washer and pawl from the shaft.

5. Carefully remove the pulley from the shaft, not disturbing the tension spring canister.

6. Cut the rope or untie the knot using an awl and pliers. (If you want to keep the old rope at its original length for a spare).

7. Thread the Elastostart rope through the starter assembly and into the pulley. Tie a simple knot at the end and pack it into the pulley.

8. Wind the rope clockwise tightly around the pulley.

9. Put the pulley back onto the shaft engaging the spring.

10. Put the washer, starter pawl and circlip back on.

11. Adjust the tension of the rope so that the handle doesn't flop over when at rest. This is done by rotating the pulley under tension to release enough cord to make one or more loops around the pulley until the pull handle rests against the housing with slight tension.

12. Put the assembly back onto the saw housing and install and tighten the screws.

I purchased my (Elastostart 1122 190 3400) on E-bay for $19.95 shipping included.

I just popped the starter off, cut/tossed the old cord, strung the Elastostart cord and tied it off, spun the pulley and took the cord with it, then let it go gently and put the whole thing back together. Took about two minutes!

Guess it's easier to put Stihl parts on a Husky

My Stihl dealer had too many customers to handle on the day I picked up my new saw. I told the owner I would do the Elastostart installation myself so he just mounted the right length cord on the new handle. It came with an installation diagram. Removing the bent wire retaining clip on the starter assembly was the only task that had me temporarily befuddled. Looking back now, I think I should have used needle-nosed pliers to ease that clip off, as the clip got bent out of it's original shape in the removal process, but not enough to prevent it from doing it's job when re-installed.

The whole replacement task took less than ten minutes.

The only odd aspect of the new Elastostart cord handle is that one end of the new cord sticks out above the red cap on the new handle almost a quarter of an inch instead of lying in a recessed well on the stock handle.

The string is an integral part of the handle on an Elastostart. It can't be replaced with a standard piece of string. The Elasto is actually part of the string itself on one end.

Ahh Grasshopper,,,, but you can replace the string in an Elasto start handle with the Elasto start string refill,,,
it has all the stops molded on,,,,,, as you say it is not standard,,,,

However quite possible!!!!! LOLOL!!!!!!!! :givebeer:

Tis true. I just wanted to make it clear that the dealer didn't just go clip a new piece of string off for use in an Elastostart.

Sigh..... He might well have done that. The lower end spring-based elastostarts just use a piece of cord. The RUBBER based elaststarts (don't buy anything else for an 026 or above) use the special cord ($2.25 or so) the molded plastic grippers.

Red cap... Spring based...

It's not correct. Have your dealer check it.

My dealer said that the cord he selected for my Elastostart handle was different than the stock cord. He attached it to the red capped Elastostart handle leaving the cord stub exposed above the cap. With gloves on I do not feel the exposed stub and it all works as advertised.

Do I just pry the red cap off and trim off the exposed stub? I assume there is a cord knot under the red cap to keep the handle attached to the cord.
