Does any one have a sure way to identify a monster elm? I am about to dead wood what i am pretty sure is an american elm but am not positive we measured the base and it was about 18.5 feet around the trunk goes up and splits as two mains and then shoots leaders straight out to the sides in every direction !The ho walked it of and it was around 130ft it is a beauty leaves are still small a little rough but not overly! THANKS!

Cut a piece of the dead wood and try to split it.If your axe pops back and hits you between the eyes it is elm.Wipe away the blood, check the wood and it will Not be split!:msp_scared:

I know its elm how do i determine what kind of elm???

Thanks to both of you for the helpful posts. I had no idea about elm identification & today I am here for gathering knowledge about this kind of things. Now, I have got some idea about it.

Spaaaammmer FAIL!

American Elm
Twigs without hair, or sparingly pubescent, zig zag. Buds brown and hairless or sparingly
Seed tip/wing is deeply notched.
Bark light and dark grey areas.

Prune when dormant so as not to attract Elm Bark Beetles the vector for DED.

The American elm the bark grooves run in straight unbroken lines up the tree, and has fairly smooth leaves. The Slippery elm with a shaggy loose fitting bark, and has medium sized leaves that are not as smooth. THen there is an elm with small leaves, the bark is tight like American elm. I've never seen one as big as you describe, but these do grow tall.

Its a rarity.
Like our American Sweet Chestnut Castanea dentata.
Both were our super canopy trees like Redwoods of the East.
Over 10' diam and over 200' tall.
DNA technology may bring them back to their former glory.

18 feet around and 130 feet tall. Unless it's in the middle of a clearing it could be a nightmare to drop. I'd be nervous, but let's see some pics of this monster now that we are all curious!
