They are arthropods like a tcik, but are in the mite group, like scabies, but not as bad.

The larval instar is what takes the bloodmeal by forming an ulceration where they hatch.

User "Che" posted a link to a very informative web page about chiggers here sometime within the past couple of years.  A search for posts by her with that term will find it, I'm sure.
