Can anyone give me a rough idea of the total cost (tree and labor) of a 10 " flowering crab installed of course?

Over herer it is usually around 3-4 times cost.

Will you be prepping the planting hole with a stump grinder or hand digging?

Will you be selecting the stock and picking up or having it delivered?

Do you have a ball dolly, or need to rent one, or can you carry the plant w/o damaging it??

Will clarify a little more..........

Cost of spading the tree out and replaced (with spade) with tree of similar diameter. Any better?

Just from taking a guess at this, I would suggest you contact the local tree moving companies which use tree spades. Get their prices and add a percentage on top of it. Don't give the client a guarantee unless the spade people are willing to give you one.

Spade rental around here is 65-75 an hour.

Travel to site

Pull old tree

Dispose of it

pull new tree

install it

return travel.

It all depends on the times in between each operation. If you don't run into big rocks the actula digging goes quick, like with a bucket- line up rig, set out riggers, set spade, run hydraulics...

Like with a crane rental the travel times can eat you alive.

Menchhofer-
Depending on where you are at here in the state (I assume somewhat close to Indy), I know of a few companies that have large spades. Whether they are large enough for a 10" crab is unknown.

If you are close enough to Indy, call a company called Tree Movers (it may be Indy Tree Movers, I'm not sure), the owner is named Larry. They have some larger Vermeer spades on large chassis. Don't expect cheap though, 2 years ago, if my information and reccollection is correct, he was charging $300/hour to move trees from a nursery near Seymour to a site near Zionsville.

If you are to the west of Indy, I can give you the name of someone else.

Your biggest problem will be finding a tree that large.

We usually charge somewhere between $300-$500 for a 1 1/2"-2" tree, installed, depending on the size of the tree and the site (and anymore, how much bullsh*t we have to put up with from the client!).

HTH.

Dan,

Thanks for the input....are you in Putnam County?

I did not know there were any tree services around here who really CARE for trees. I am in Hendricks County, Avon....perhaps not too far away from each other.

I realize a tree of that size will be difficult to find...I am just trying to get a rough idea to run by the client. I would probably guess by the time it was all over, he would have to settle for a smaller tree and the cost would be around $2500-3000.

Tree was damaged by vehicle.

Is this for an insurance claim?

Now that i think more into it, you would need a 120 inch spade on a 10 inch tree. There are only a few custom built rigs in that size, in the US. I think Davey has 2 of them.

If you are doing something for replacement value, or cost of cure (CoC takes into account extended maintenance) Call the 10 inch tree irreplaceable from a practicality point of veiw, or look at frost ball crain install.

Maybe with CoC determine value and replace with 2 or 3 smaller trees. By duing that you can make the cost seem more reasonable to the underwriter, and the client can recieve a greater precieved value of recompence.

Also the survivablility of the install would be greater then a very large tree.

Then you can add in fees for the legwork and report witing time

Mench-
I am indeed in Putnam County, near Roachdale, so yes, we are fairly close to each other.

I don't work for a tree service, however. Most of them around here are the "top-and-drop" kind, if you know what I mean. I work for probably the only well qualified landscape company in the county.

Since I know where you are, you might try to get ahold of (I believe their name is) IndyScapes out of Clayton. They have a good sized spade, though I would have to agree with JPS on needing a larger spade for a 10" tree.

See our other discussions about nursery grown trees, and my reccomendation would be to plant a smaller tree(s).
