Here's the deal: I think a lot of guys cut firewood and run saws as a hobby. Being familiar with a saw and proficient at cutting they think it's the same deal in the air. Not so. Aerial work is not for the hobbyist.

I mean it's not like we are doing brain surgery or anything. I really think that anyone with the wherewithal to get up into the tree could do it with some training but it's not like building your own deck or laying bricks or something. There are subtle things to know that could be deadly to the ignorant. Cut a board wrong for a homemade deck or lay your bricks wrong and it costs nothing but money. Make a wrong cut in the tree and it could cost a life.

Not rocket science but not a simple Simon job either.
 
Tell them " No problem, just come work for me about 6 months and in that time I can give you enough training to be able to do your fairly simple tree job". If they are serious enough to show up at your place, then they will probably pay attention and learn something. More likely, they will decide to hire a pro.
 
I once told a friend how to install a ceiling fan , Simple enough . A week later his ceiling & fan caught fire . I won't do that again . Same principal here !!!
