Got a call today to please come take out a stump ... we don't typically do stumps ... sub them out. Well the old man called asking if we could remove a stump from a 80 foot pine tree for him (never worked for this guy before). Stated I only need you to take it down enough so I can plant another tree in the same spot. (Is the guy on acid or what). I politely explained that that was NOT a simple process. Well he wasn't happy when I said no. The phone rang 10 min. later only to have his old lady asking the same question.:jawdrop::jawdrop::jawdrop:

I would have said yes 100 per hour two hour minimum and been done in 15 minutes.

so my friend how would you pull a stump like that in 15 min. ???? I clarified if he wanted stump grinding ... no I wanted it entirely removed as he want to have another 12 foot tree placed using a tree mounted tree shovel in exactly the same spot - not 5 feet one way or other ... the exact spot.:dizzy:

My grinder will grind to that depth essentially make a hole for planting I have done it many times it has balz! If that won't work for him bye is all I can say.

I can grind the same hole with my 665a vermeer (60hp) with greenteeth. A 60" dia hole ground 24" deep will get you through most evergreen stumps as the roots grow laterally rather than down.

If you're running a smaller 25hp grinder, I could see why you might pass on this one as grinding that big of a hole would take a long time as the cutter heads on those smaller machines only go down about 12" so you have to gradually "ramp" your way down to the 24" depth.

Yup I had a small grinder it had its place but not in my shed. I could grind that stump in around 15 minutes but there would be a mountain of shavings so likely he would not enjoy the price for debris removal!

You aren't kidding there. Recently, I ground out a 60" maple stump with my 665a to a depth of 24" so the HO could plant another tree there. took about 40 minutes to grind. To get the entire 60" stump plus root flare, I had to grind a 10' diameter hole. It was just about an entire 14' dump trailer full of grindings.

I did a 7' diameter cottonwood a few years back with my sc252. It was before I purchased by 665a. I only had to go 8" deep but I had to grind about a 16' diameter area to get the root flare. It took me about 3 1/2 hours and I had to reset up about 20 times and clean up as I ground as about every 10 minutes the chips would pile up under the 252.

Needless to say, for those big stumps, the larger containment area of the big towables is much nicer!

Grinding a stump 2 ft below grade is usually more than enough to plant another tree. The only trees you have to watch out for if your doing this are the Plane, Loucust and Oaks species as they tend to have more of a taproot type root system that go down deeper verses the shallower surface root systems of Maples, Ash and evergreens.

I get these requests also. Good money if the client is willing to pay. Not every tree service can grind a stump down that deep.

Seperates the men from the boys.

I would think 2 foot would work even if there were tap root below it would just create a easier path for sinker roots to follow. Species would be a concern however, especially if it were Juglans niagra or other species that release alliochemicals, spelled wrong probably ,but these chemicals are growth inhibitors; a natural herbicide sort of.

I want a vacuum loader to fit my containment area that will transfer grindings into the pickup bed and then unload by blowing them out into my garden.

What happens when your vacuum sucks up the 8" rock or 12" chunk of stump that your grinder kicks loose...? :monkey:

Not a bad idea though if it were sucking only grindings.

gotta love the ol 665

i did a maple yesterday to 12" below grade, 60" wide, with my 665 vermeer, in 25 minutes. (standard grade teeth) by the time i go down another 12" the stump is pretty much gone.
