Interesting comments,thoughts. JPS, a widow maker is a broken branch or top that can fall and kill the faller (thus making a widow), a dead tree is called a snag.

In my experiance, a widowmaker is any tree or part of that would cause the worker to think he's in a high risk situation. Be it the entire tree or one full of deadwood or storm hangers.

This could be a coloquial differance in usage though, to give you the benifit of the doubt

Though, I do know a class-c feller who does hotshot work who calls scary snag's widowmakers.

ive said this before but we have a few mulchers, one a tracked one with a mulching head and one a 20ton volvo excavator conversion with a mulching head

i have felled quite a few trees that were pushed over by an excavator, on my command. machines rock, ive smashed up a few small trees with our 13tonner. its ohh soo fun.

trying to persuade the boss to get a stump grinder head for the volvo mulcher, a 350hp stumpgrinder, down point is it wont fit in many folks gardens. the price you have to pay.

Ahhhhh lighten up Jack! Smile... I dont think anyone here was saying, or bragging, about tearing up trees at random just for fun.. We'll leave that to 056kid

But when a lot needs to be cleared for good reasons, constuction, etc; then why not use the right tool for the job???? And when you use the right tool, and you enjoy your job, then why shouldnt you be having fun doing the work??? Ahhhh.. The good life...

When you have finished logging the sh@t out of something and cleared the land you have to have had fun doing it to balance the negative energy that all the tree-hugging, do-gooders send you. You know, the dirty looks, the screaming, crying, making you out to be genocidal maniac. I didnt get the permit, approval etc, just doing my job. Log it, burn it, pave it. kind of joking, take it easy now.
