OK, it's hotter than heck down here and I'm sucking down fumes from my saws. How can I route the exhaust away from me? I have seen saws that are ported and they appear to have an exhaust pipe coming out of the casing. With my Stihls (MS440 & 192T) the fumes seem to be everywhere. Is putting in an exhaust pipe a solution? How big a job is it? Will it keep the fumes from wafting up in my face? My respirator seems to actually make things worse. It filters out everything EXCEPT the darn exhaust fumes and then they get concentrated in the mask. Great, just great. Any and all info is appreciated.

Easy, use an exhaust pipe.
Cheap> garden hose

Cheap> Anything you can attach that works (little shorty, maybe 4-5 ft long, that you can re-direct exhaust away from you).

Expensive> A clip-in fitting with (some length here), able to not melt.

I think its easier than using breathers.

:D

An other worthless 0.02$ worth.

Hey Sunrise Guy,

Check out the thread in the chainsaw section from AS member ScottWoJo. he has some nice skills with MIG welding. He could probably weld a threaded attachment to your muffler so you can attach a piece of hose. Run a few feet of hose off the end of the muffler and I'm sure you'll be happier.

I am not sure adding a pipe will help. Let me rephrase that. If you add a pipe it will add back preasure and decrease performance. This would only make you be in the tree longer with a running saw inhaling fumes not good. Try a synthetic mix and let us know how it turns out I would be interested in running if it worked.

I see most most people I have worked with run their saws with plugged up air cleaners much of the time. That could help if you make sure you clean or switch them often and be sure your carb is adjusted to the mix. Compare your air cleaner to a new one for air flow .It may look clean and still be plugged. I am sure the other suggestions will apply to give you some much cleaner exhaust overall.

try Stihl HP Ultra Mix oil

I use my saws primarily for milling which really puts you ito the exhause zone. A while ago I swithched to Stihl HP Ultra mix oil and Bio plus bar oil. For most the bar oil may not be worth spending 2x the money for, but for me it is worth it not to be crawling around in the other stuf. One of the reasons I switched to the bio plus bar oil was for a particlar batch of milling where the orchard is organic and the sawdust was going to be used for mulch. Switching to the HP Ultra made a huge diferance. now there is significantly less smoke and what litlte there is smells like a food fryer.

Some will tell you that there are other oils that are cheaper, This is true. There are also other saws that are cheaper too.
