You take out the spark plug and stick the curved end of the stop into the cylinder (just about 1/2 inch of it) and it will stop the crank rotation as the piston tries to go to top dead center. Then you can take the clutch off, although I use the impact and no stop except compression.
The plastic stop is used instead of a piece of rope. Too many people don't know how much rope to put in and get the rope into the ports.
Also there is some possibility of damage to a piston with the screw in metal type stop.
