Looks like lots of side force to me. Bad crotch or cross grain. When I split wood I pick my battles and try to read the wood before hitting to go button, only takes part of a second. I used 3/4" material on my 36" splitter, wedge has 30" of usable wedge and is 4 way. No problems yet but like I say I spin the piece if I see it's a bad one.
same. I deal with mostly large stuff,,that no one else wants..so like you,,i look at some pieces,,exactly how I want to break em!! and one I cut down, three years ago,,white oak,, near had branches from 4 feet off the ground,,to the top!!! cut it down, lobbed off the branches[some big]and got it home!! fun.. when I went to cut it up, near NONE of it got split!!! it was so full of knots from the branches,, idda had twisted chunks of junk.. noodled it all!!

What about AR steel? Guys I have to stick with .5" it works like a dream on my splitter. The factory blade that was .5" lasted over 30 years. I just have to find the correct steel for the job. I am not having much luck finding t1 or hy80 in small amounts

My main wedge and 4 and 6 way are all out of AR400. It's some hard chit! but it works great!

I grabbed an old cutting edge off a loader for mine. 3/4 AR I believe. I just sharpened it and it has been great.

I made my own but I'd say anything James sells at Splitez is good stuff. He provided a lot of the stuff for my build and builds them for a living.

T1 is roughly the same as AR500 I believe. 1/2" is pretty thin with it that tall and no side bracing. I'd go with 3/4" or 1".
