Because I slaughtered the rotten oaks behind my workshop, I now have around 1/4 acre of newly-cleared ground. It looks horrible. I haven't removed the oak stumps yet, the ground is lumpy from the tree crew's machinery, there is a thick blanket of rotten oak leaves on the ground, I have weeds to cope with, and there is little grass.

I was thinking I would just turn this into more lawn, but I don't need more lawn, and I sure don't need more space to mow.

I am now considering putting maybe 4 fast-growing shade trees on it. I'm not interested in things like live oaks or hickories, because I will definitely be dead before they grow. I've read that crape myrtles are good for shade if you let them reach full height. I know they love my yard.

Is there any other tree I should consider? I'm like 75 miles north of Orlando. The ground is sand. Rain here is irregular. We get wet weeks and dry weeks. Lots of sun where I would be planting.

I don't want anything taller than 40 feet at maturity.
