I would plant the new tree about 5-10' from the dead pine.
I have no idea where the sprinkler lines are, I just know they are shallow and they usually take the path of least resistance when installing them. And I think the system went in around 1997.
I don't want to give up much lawn, I will mulch around the base about 3-5' in all directions and plant some annual flowers, but wouldn't sacrifice my grass. I know this an arbor site, but the lawn is more important than the shade to me.
I found an old pic, it was taken as a "before" picture. there has been a lot of work done since then.
