Just wondering if any of you had a favorite 8. So far I've tried a rescue 8. But I think that they are to big to keep on my saddle. So then I bought a pirana. I really like the ability to change the friction but didn't like how akward it was to use one-handed. Now I have a Huit with that little tab thing. Seems to be a good size.

Oh, as for the pirana, I put it on a loop runner. I keep it on me while climbing and it works great as a friction device to lower branches.

I Like the Cardiac Arrester. The Piranha Looks interesting. The Rescue 8 Works well for lite rigging though.

RQ3 eight with ears on the side. Far easier to lock/unlock, and variable levels of friction available when in use. It's the size of a rescue eight.

i've been wanting a pirana for ages now, but since i rarely to never use one its way down on mylist of priorities

I got one, cause I thought it was 'neat', Most use it get's is lowering while working alone.

Have uesd it a couple of times for fun on long decents.

It has so many options, that it is over kill.

burnham, where can I find one of those? That thing looks cool.

stephen, I thought that I'd really like the pirana too. But, after buying and using it, I found that it wasn't practical for my setup. Where it connects to the krab is really small. I like an 8 to be at the narrow end of a pear shaped krab but, with their design, it has to stay on the larger end. That was my problem with it. As a lowering device though, the thing kicks butt.

I use a Kong, regular ole 8 without ears. Works great for me. Its small enough to hang on 'biner off the side of my saddle and not get in my way while I'm working.

You can get the RQ3 from:

Probably other places, too. Try a Google search.
This unit truly is head and shoulders better than any other rescue eight when it comes to variable level of friction available. It's rated at 9000 lbs. and while designed for 7/16ths rope, will easily accept 1/2 inch.
