I had an old Elvex helmet that I used for years. Even though it had a screen, I would still get a lot of sawdust in my eyes. I'm still not sure if it came in from the top or the bottom. I just bought a Husky helmet and I'm having the same problem. I do a ton of limbing of standing conifers. Mostly taking dead limbs off the bottom of firs and pines. Seems like every time I look up to cut those branches just over my head, I get some sawdust in my eyes. Anybody else have this problem or is it just me? If not, what helmet / eye protection are you using?

You did say you get a lot of dust huh? Though i don't use these helmets I am somewhat surprised. is it the light fine dust that gets through the front of the screen? Its not comeing throught the gap between the rim and screen? That shouldn't happen. I used plugs and bugz so I know what gets through the screen and I pretty much know there really ain't much to do about it be feel glad ain't nothing bigger comeing through. That's what I do... or shut my eyes.
Well, maybe I don't shut em all the time but you are gonna get a face full of crust cutting above your head.

Some are big chips, so I think they are coming in through the gap between the visor and the screen itself. How do you like the bugz? They are goofy looking, but if they work, hey why not.

I just use a Black Diamond climbing helmet and wrap around Stihl sunglasses. Works for me. I never get anything in my eyes unless I forget to put my sun/safety glasses on.

those new Kask helmets with associated visor look pretty tight but pretty costly too. pole chainsaw cuts always cause me probs. that is prob what you are talking about?

them new kask lids suck. sure they look pretty dope but the visor get dirty too quick (the inside has a dust magnet quality i tell you) and the attachment of visor to the lid setup likes to fall out easy meaning you gotta keep an eye on it so you don't lose any pieces.

you need to file off some of the plastic of the ear muffs to get it to fit the helmets ghetto screw in ear muffler adapters. mine already has lost some of the tiny screw ins the give you.

and my goodness does it get hot in there....

also when you make a butt cut the visor seems to help keep the exhaust around your face and breathing.

and also the black foam on the inside of mine is starting to break apart.

they also suck for the headsets for communication. we using the valcomm i think.

they are pretty fly looking though.

edit: way too much money for that much hassle.

Good to know. I thought they looked pretty warm with all the foam padding in there as opposed to petzl's suspension set up with the straps.

My attraction was the advertised part where they sit down on the head lower and give a lower profile.

Went ahead and bought a Petzl Vent to replace my Petzl Ecrin and gave my GM the one I had. Glad now I didn't buy the Kask.

Safety glasses or sunglasses from Stihls 4 pack set work good for me. Climb with the Vertex and on the ground use Husky with muffs, lost the screen a while ago. Never fails: always get crud in my eyes looking up and cutting overhead, squinting helps:laugh:

All my helmets have that bit of orange nylon that clips between the visor and the helmet, has elastic to keep it snug aginst the helmet. Blocks the gap.
I wear glasses under the visor most times...keeps most stuff out.

Yea it seems that you may standing in the wind or maybe consider different glasses , I usualy get bombed running the power pruners or when I am chunking wood , ya just can't get away from that breeze that keeps the chips swirling between you and the trunk . Its more of an annoyance when the chips go down my neck on my back thats what ####es me off all the time ..

If sawdust bothers you that bad, you should probably just quite the industry. i love getting saw dust all over me. especially in the winter, gets stuck in the beard, and mustach and then freezes w/ the snow and snot! good stuff!!

I ditched my vertex vent last march for a kask and have never been happier. If you don't have a pumpkin head or larger the petzl never really feels that snug. It has a tendency to ride the back of your head if you dont have
your ear muffs flipped forward.
The kask is warmer due to the fact it doesn't sit six inches of your head .But it's sleek, fits like a glove, the visor is the only eye protection that will never fog and damn does it look good.
The ear muff adapters have been changed and so has the foam(btw i had the first few off the line and haven't had a problem) I really can't say enough good things about this lid ,worth taking a look at.
Another option is the Pacific hardhat, I saw a guy take a massive chunk to the dome from 30 feet and he was back to work the next day.(with a few stitches. It's one tough helmet.

you got a second generation kask, holdenwood? i am mailing mine back when the new ones come out.

all i am saying is that for almost 2hundo that hat is overrated.

I used to wear Bugz and they were awesome. Now I wear prescription sun glasses with the screen mesh safety goggles over the top. They are not as low profile as the Bugs but they are way more so then a visor. Never get in the way climbing and do a great job keeping the dust and chunks and poky sticks out of the eyes

Didnt know if anybody has ever realized this.

You go to Vermeer or whatever dealer you choose. You buy a Petzl climbing helmet for 100 bucks or so.
Go to Walmart, see the EXACT same helmet in the bike section, maybe a different color, same exact safety ratings, only it is 15 bucks!
Same applies to Carabiner's, I can buy Petzl and Black Diamond at the local rock climbing store for half the price of Sherrill, same exact one's. Just a FYI
