Felling a Tree without a Notch...Sounds Like TROUBLE!!!!

A small notch will cause the stem to jump and leave the stump. The more the notch the more hinge before stem stump seperation.

I've seen loggers use angled notches and angled back cuts. Never used this type of notch and not sure what if any or how much control you have with this type. But it seems to me it kinda launches the stem away from you when it breaks off.

The company I work for requires a notch on anything over 4" in diam. but it really depends on what your eyes see and you know you must do to safely get it on the ground.
