Some fence board questions:

do most sticker their boards to prevent mildew? We weren't but a few stacks that weren't sold this past fall/winter started to mildew even when covered.

We've heard white oak lasts longer than red...is this true, or does it depend if the saps down when cut?

Any of you'ze guys selling your boards? If so...what are you getting for them? They seem to sell around here for about 38 to 43 cents per foot...any more they seem to sit.

thanks!

Everything that comes off my mill that is going to sit gets stickered.
I figure if it ain't worth stickering, it ain't worth cutting.
Once in a while I have a customer that wants the lumber stacked tight, but I figure if thats the way they want it then they are responsible for how it turns out.

I sticker everything until it is "light weight". The locals say white oak lasts longer, but I haven't tried both. I have cut some red & it's stickered...not used it yet.
I have decided for the selling side just to charge by the hour based on the species of wood being cut. These are based on my own logs....if they bring their own it all changes.

Polpar-$35hr
Red Oak-$40(don't have much)
ERC-$25
Hickory-$30
Maple-$30
Ash-$30

I have very few white oak, so it ain't getting cut.

It's just easier than the whole board feet thing........

are you asking about oak as stickers or fencing? as stickers they both last a long time, but low sap or dried wood would cut down on stain. as fencing ive never seen oak used down here its mostly treated pine or cedar.
