I wake up early today feeling cold, look out at the thermometer, 40deg,
half hour later its 42deg.

Looks like it soon will be time for some of that willow, aspen, or box elder,

but for now the gas burner making ham & eggs with some coffee did the trick.

Winter is coming

Was 61 here this morning and supposed to see a high of 80. With average weather I am about a month away from firing up the Woodmaster. Need to see lows in the 40s, highs 70 or less. Looking forward to free hot water (and lots of it) if nothing else. My boiler lines run all the way across the house in the basement and even though insulated they give off enough heat to warm the house up seveal degrees. For that reason and a couple close neighbors we dont run all summer long. Been cooking hot dogs outside though to have a reason for a fire, LOL.

Yea we had 34 the other morning but we are still a month away from the house getting cold enough to start the first fire of the season. Remembering to shut the windows at night usually does the trick.

Just the opposite here, we throw the windows open at night to cool off!
I cant wait for cooler weather, makes cutting so much easier!

It's just starting too feel a bit like fall at night and early mornings lately. I'm really hoping that Sept will be what Aug wasn't though! Nothing like a nice Indian summer! This morning I was outside early taking a walk and on coming back I was looking at the wood stacks and the wheel barrow and thinking, Hmmmm? Might be time too start loading up the barn? I fought off the urge (Not hard ;-) and came in for the morning coffee, fresh blueberries and cereal. After that the temp is looking like high 70s today so that though is out the window. I usually don't move a stick inside till Sept anyways. Then it becomes a ritual of 10 minimum wheelbarrows full a day either early morn or just before sundown.

I couldn't wait. I fired the boiler (no blower) Sunday and have been burning up all the fallen branches and sticks in the yard. I call it "break in time"...

How do you like your CB 5036? I have one on the way, pad poured, heat exchanger in furnace, sidearm getting ready to go on hot water tank next rainy day. Any tips or pointers for me?

PS: What do you mean by no blower? They are natural draft did you add one to yours?

I had my first fire yesterday.I also used the cool weather to my advantage to wipe out a Wasp nest third one this year I had to deal with.

LOL that was my mistake left all the windows open went to work and came home to a cold house!

Cool and rainy now, but supposed to hit 90 F this week end. I've got a $10 bet with LOML that it won't reach 90, but that's what they say. "They" happen to be the worst weather forecasters in the USA. They all assembled right here in the midlands, and I can't recall them ever being right about much of anything when it comes time to forecast the weather.

My trick knee and aching back both do a better job. :monkey:

fall does have a tendency to bring out the pyromaniacs in all of us.

we work all year, fight bugs, and cuts and sweat....just to watch it all go up in smoke.

but, for some reason.....it all seems worth it.

It usually takes a damp wet cold rainy day to get my first fire of the season. It was about the 2nd or 3rd week in October last year. I'll use soft maple just to take the chill out of the house.

Its kind of sad when you think about it, we all sit here waiting for the cold weather with glee(me included) then when it finally gets here we all gripe about the cold weather and cant wait until spring gets here(me included)
You just cant make humans happy!

Yep I think it is the wetness that want's to make us burn the first fire. But it snowed in the mountains yesterday yahoo. My neighbor went fishing and said he got snowed on.

i'd rather be cutting wood when it's cold out...man, i hate using a saw when it's hot and muggy.

+1! Not much is worse than cutting wood in 90 F heat. It saps your strength, dehydrates you, and you use half again more chain oil than necessary because it thins out in the heat and a bunch gets wasted.

About the only thing good about it is that you knock off about five pounds of water weight on each cutting session. My solution is to start right after sun up when it's coolest and try to quit before noon.

No blower meaning, the fire is lit, the pump is running, but I have yet to turn on the fan blower in the indoor forced air unit. Don't need the heat in the house yet.
