I am a bit confused about which round file to use when filing my
new 3/8 chain.

Oregon has it in writing to use the 7/32
Stihl has it in writing to use the 13/64
Which is it and does it matter in the begining?

I have made the switch to 3/8 when I got my 357xp, I have always run 325 prior to this. (340 & 029)
I always stepped down a size when the cutter is 1/2 worn.

With a new chain (3/8) do I start with 7/32 and drop to 13/64 when half worn? Or Do I start with 13/64 and drop to 3/16 when half worn?
Thanks

Sorry...I forgot to list what I am using: Oregon 73

my preference

I use the 7/32 on oregon and the 13/64 on the stihl chain. The stihl chain is considerably harder and seems to have a smaller grind that is impossible to duplicate. The oregon seems a little easier to file. On a side note, .325 stihl rs also calls for a 13/64 file which I have used with good results. 3/16 seems to leave too big of a hook.

If I remember correctly, it is a bit difficult to get the 7/32 file into a new 3/8 Stihl cutter without first placing it straight across betwen raker and cutter then swinging the file back to the proper angle. That is probably the reason for the 13/64 . As you get to the rear portion of the tooth it is common to drop a file size to keep from cutting into the tie strap or else getting high file placement and less hook than desireable.
