I have been looking for some time and have never see one in person until mine arrived today. This one was on Madison Wisconsin CL. It's risky buying sight unseen from several states away so I threw the dice...it was $185 shipped. The seller said it was his fathers who drained all the fuel out and put it on a shelf in the garage sometime in the 70's.

Kinda surprised it does not weigh more and the 404 chain is just massive.

Like most, the spokes on the recoil cover are broken and a couple of squares on the rear flip cover are also broken. And the throttle lock slider is missing the front half of the tab.Hopefully I can run down these parts. Did it come with dual bucking spikes or just one? Also can anyone tell me if the muffler is missing some kind of rectangular cover on the front?
Compression is 135...don't know if that's low or in spec?

Plans are to get it running, and leave it in it's well used condition.........

There's a "hood" for sale now on Ebay for $22.

Thanks Brad, I have already emailed the seller asking if all the "grids" are intact....his pic's don't show the sides at all. Is 135 ok compression?? sure "feels" like more than that when ya pull it:laugh:

Nice project. Still looks in very good condition.
I have seen a few styles of mufflers on the 07 series, but the one you have is the same as the Stihl 070/090. It's only missing the famous grill plate, but they can be found new.

Ahhh, a grill plate...thanks Belgian. I guess I need to hunt down an IPL/parts list eh?

Dan, too bad you weren't close enough to pick-up...that was cheap....worth way more than that in parts.

Looks like it came with two bucking spikes and I already found a new one for $23. New won't really match the "patina" so I am going to hunt for a used one.

Belgian I found the bolts & the locking plate for the muff cover...no cover yet....Nevermind, found it at Norwalk Power equipment in California. They seem to have a few old stock oem parts.

I don't know who this guy is, but might be worth a try? Not so much the auction item, but what he says about parts.

Brad, I got a email back from the 'hood" seller....it's for a 07...not an "S"..and it's intact...dang it. Someone else here should jump on it.

The neat thing about these is that parts pop up from time to time, we just have to be diligent.

I am 12 years late but that how it goes. I am the brainstorm who came up with that stupid idea to print water decals for the old stihl vintage logo. Here is another one. If you have plenty of time just rebuilt the fins with JB weld. Drill a hole on both ends of the fin.
Stick a wire in, make formwork and fill up with JB weld. Here is two photos to show that it works. Ignore the cracks in the paintwork. The paint and the clear don't seem to work together.
Regards.
