Well, it has been some time since I got out my monster maul and done some splitting. I have been fixing and selling saws instead of doing firewood for a year or so. Well the last few days have been perfect weather for splitting (30-32 degrees, light trace of snow, and cloudy) and boy does it feel good to get back in the swing of things. Here are some pictures of my progress.

First is the mound of black walnut I got. Sprinkled in is a little red elm and sugar maple. Should come out to around a 2/3th of a cord. Pics don't do justice. Over 6 feet tall, packed tight and around 8 feet in diameter. Looks like a bee hive in person.

Lastly, here is the next pile I have to tackle. I got this from work this summer (groundie for a tree company). Mostly elm and maple. The elm is a PITA, but that is where the 084 comes in for slicing them up into halves. I have more at work I need to get and then I have a little pile of apple to split also. College takes a lot of my time, so I hope to catch up this x-mas break on my splitting.

Nice job there Andy!

Splitting with a maul is a lot of fun I've discovered. Those rounds will keep you busy for a little while:clap:. I did some of my very first splitting with a maul yesterday and now I'm hooked! Nice pics!!

Minnesota Splitting Weather

On Sunday in western Minnesota we had -15 to -20 temps, 8" of snow and wind gusts of 50 mph. I just got a new Fiskars splitting axe so had to try it out on some elm in the middle of the storm. The stringy old elm exploded on impact. The wind chill nailed me though. I blew a fuse on the damper door of my boiler and my fingers froze in seconds as I tried to get it replaced.

Pictures never do due justice. 3" in the last hour, and still falling like rain, in for a doozy....doozie.....?
