Picked up an 084. Next is a 5' bar & ripping chain, and a mill.

Nice. That oughta do it. I've never run a CSM. I wonder what the life expectancy is for a milling saw?

That's a nice, clean looking 084. With a 5' bar you must be planning on milling some pretty large logs. Slabs will get really heavy if they have any width and thickness to them. 8' slabs of oak 30" wide and 2" thick take 2 guys to move.

Yeah I have a 36" band mill, so the chainsaw will be for the big ones. Mostly it'll be for quartering large logs so I can fit the quarters on the band mill, but on occasion I'll be milling large slabs. Bought the saw a week ago today but dropped it at the local saw shop for them to go through & do whatever needed done for me to work it. Needed an air filter & carb tune for high altitude, and otherwise is in pristine condition.

Hooooo Doggie! That saw looks like it's chewing slabs just sitting there! Make sure to post some pictures of what you mill with it!

If a stock saw is run slightly rich there is no reason why it should last the same number of hours whether it is for milling or other work. Stihl claim 2000 hours at WOT for a P&C. Of course because they are run for long periods at WOT the possibility of overheating is higher if something else is not on song.

Nice saw,

didn't Mtgun use one of them?

Many parts a NLA so keep an eye out for a cheap parts saw.

I am no stranger to milling with a saw that has minimal parts available.

Guess that's why I can't turn down a resonably priced one:bang:

With that said, keep her a little fat and give her a rest, now and then, she will treat you as good as you treat her.

Needs wheels on it:D Sure is big.....what kind of fuel mileage you suppose she gets?

Wish I had one......just so the old-timer down at the local shop could gripe about me needing 190+ drive link loops:blob2:
You know, we gonna need some action shots as soon as possible now! Right? So roll that 5' round log over by something pretty(background that is, we don't wanna be looking at your neighbors trash cans or the big gal down the street exercising in the front window), set the camera to video, and give us a bigtime show! Got the bag of popcorn waiting in the microwave....

Scott (you got the milling attachment already) B

Yall seem as excited as me....almost

I bought the saw somewhat locally. Right now it has a 36" hard nose bar, which has to go. The local shop is working with me on getting a 5' bar & ripping chain, and i'll likely be getting the mill from Panther. The shop owner was impressed with it, said it's crazy strong. That wouldn't normally mean anything to me but this shop supports the local lumberjack competitions (hot saw races), so they know the strength ranges of saws. I have never milled with a chainsaw before so I got some learning to do. Hope yall don't mind if I nag you with questions. Will keep pics coming!

Do keep the hardnose for stumpin'.

To me that's half the joy of owning a big saw.

Stumpin' and pulling a CSM separates the Men from the boys.

I own my woodlot, so we flush cut all the stumps.

nice saw Q! it's funny we're both looking to do the exact same thing. i'm gonna sell or trade my 066 to upgrade to an 084/088 so that i can quarter the big dogs. my bsm will only mill 26" so it sucks missing out on the big trees. where are you gonna get your bar?

Was gonna get my bar from Baileys but my local shop owner already did the leg work to find everything I'd need. It'll be a Stihl bar. He's giving it to me for quite a bit cheaper than a similar Woodsman Pro bar from Baileys. He's also doing the leg work on finding the chain, too. The guys at the shop are in love with the saw & want to see it going, so i'm going to keep things as local as can be. They treat me right & even though the charge more for certain things compared to internet sites, I like keeping the money here.

Momma & me took it out for a spin today. She's working on some kind of photography degree so she wanted to go to the mountains for picture practice. Got some cool shots of the saw & some of the tree. It was a 4' wide x 5' tall alligator juniper stump that had been in a fire at some point. Somebody had cut as much as they could until it was just too big to cut anymore. It wasn't as nice inside as I had hoped, but there are plenty others. The important thing is that the saw cut like a monster!!! Due to the rakers on the chain being too low, it grabbed a lot & made for a vibrating cut. It actually opened up & flat out ripped on the long grain, though. Noodles by the bucket load flew everywhere. Juniper isn't a particularly hard wood, maybe somewhere just below cherry or birch, but it was decades dry like popcorn. It was a good learning experience and test. I'm now confident in the saw's power & grunt, and am excited to fit it with proper bar & chain. Will post pics as soon as I can get them loaded.

Ok so only got one good pic of the log. That's the mrs. & me, and the stump maybe was bigger than 4'x5'.

cool pic! that's a big old stump for sure. glad to hear the saw shop is helping you out and vice versa. i'm looking at a cannon or woodland pro bar from baileys. i don't even know how much a stihl bar would be, maybe i'll go talk to my local dealer.
definitely keeping an eye on your progress!

The WP bar is $400 at Baileys. The Stihl bar retails I think for around $350, plus he's giving me a bit off from that. Not sure about ripping chain yet. I guess i'll try a few & see which is best.
