A local property manager just stopped by. He wants me to look at the landscaped property of a place recently struck by lightning. The home is gone, burned to the ground.

I've seen trees in similar situations, and there are many shrubs, too that were subjected to some extreme heat.

My question: "Is there anything I should be looking for that would say that this tree is definitely not salvagable?"

Thank you everyone.

Look for other things in the area that will infer how hot the fire was near the tree.

What will get them is the boiling of sap in the bark, even if the bark is barely singed. then you will get strips of bark that will die back and get pushed off over time by the calus buildup.

It all depends on specise and fire temp.

If the trucks are not burned, but thaer is cambial damage, you can get away with keeping the tree and monitoring it over time to see if it has to come out, meanwhile have new stock installed so that it can take over when and if that time comes.
