12", 16", 24" with 16" prolly being the most common. If you're cutting for your own use, the size you can fit in your stove plays the biggest role.

16" plus or minus a couple inches  I try for 16" but sometimes you'll get to the end of a stick and halving it gives you two short/long pieces. I notice that when I'm in a hurry or tired they tend to cut longer :greenchainsaw:

We have found that 16" works for the majority of our uses and customers. We use a Mingo to mark it all, so we are very uniform when stacked.

Usually between 12 and 16, depending where the knots are and the species. I'll burn the knots too, making 3-6 inch cookies that are easy to split at that length. We use a Century Crawford cookstove and burn pretty much everything.

30 to 36" depending on how big around the wood is, if it's bigger than 8" in diameter, then I cut down to a size I can lift, handle.

I try to cut most of it at 16 that fits good in the napoleon stove in the house . My logsplitter has a 16" mark on it and anything over goes in the pile for my shop stove .

20" for anything that needs to be split, 30" for all the smaller stuff that will go right into the stove.

18' logs for the Dutch West fireplace inserts (20" max), 14" for the Jotel (16" max) and 24" logs for the big honkin' stove Mike has at his place in NY. We've actually got separate areas for each size.

As I only only ever cut firewood for our own usage (the whole family so a couple stoves at the moment in two houses) I just cut to fit the stove. Too small and it burns to fast. Too big and you have one great stump in your stove and no flames!

Cut to fit!

buckethead we got the same insert. i eyeball em at 18 myself, my splitter only fitS A 20" log so if it ill split itll fit. first year i had the stove i had all kinds of lengths from when i used the fireplace hardly any of em fit.

its a decent stove but i wish i would have gotten one with a bigger firebox, thats my only real complaint. how has yours been?

Overall it has been a great stove. Last winter we used only 150 gallons of oil instead of the usual 700. Our house layout is almost ideal with the stove in the livingroom that has vaulted ceilings that direct the heat to the 2 upstairs bedrooms. The kitchen and 1 downstairs bedroom get a little cool but, not bad. When I replace this stove I will look for a bigger one that can keep up better on the REALLY cold days.

Wood for sale I aim for 15 to 16 " unless somebody specifies they want it differant ahead of time. Longer wood doesn't work well with quite a few buyers and 1/3 cord ranks commonly called face cords is what most people are used to buying.

12"-16" here. I try to cut them long but sometimes the log doesn't work out that way. With the kids hauling them to the house the smaller the better as far as they are concerned. They don't realize that they have to haul more small pieces as compared to less large pieces.
