Not sure if this is the right forum, so be gentle. I was thinking about maybe selling a couple cord of firewood this coming winter but wasn't sure what length or thickness I should cut/split at. Any suggestions?

as far as thickness i would split most of the big stuff into 4ths and the little stuff just into halfs, length is usually 16" thats the standard around here. Although some customers like the wood in 18" lengths or even 20" i guess if you want to just cut for a general consumer 16" would be a good length. Custom orders can usually land you a few extra bucks though.

For my stove 16" works best, most customers want 18"-20" with a few special orders for 24", which costs a bit more.
My rule of thumb for splitting, if I can't pick it up with one hand, it's too big. About the size of a CD if that helps for refference. Some like it smaller, some bigger. You wont make everyone happy.

I have 3 different piles. The yuppie pile, the average wood burner pile and then the boiler fuel pile.
Yuppie/fire place - 4'' at the widest and 12" to 16" long max.
Average- Around 6" at the widest and 16" to 18" long.
Boiler fuel- Odd ball stuff and if your man enough to pick it up.

I would shoot for the average.

i cut for people between 16" to 18" then speacial order for anything bigger or smaller. for splittting i would split the big stuff in to 4s if it seems to big split it again.

If you get the orde before you cut it up you can ask them how long they want it. Like my uncle can only use short wood, but with me if the wood doesn't come past my waste it will fit in my furnace.
