i bought fitchburg chipper $200 4cyl continental runs good there are 4 knives about 6 3/8 inch long on a 9 inch drum. some parts are dated 1976. i had the whole cutter head apart, bearings, knives, inspected, cleaned, sharpened, etc. every thing looks good. it chips the branches as long as i keep pushing the branches in hard, but it wont pull the branches in by itself. i have tried setting the knives 1/8th and 1/4 inch from drum circumference, and tried several clearance adjustments and spring tension adjustments on the floor plate. it wont pull the branches of any size in hard enough to depress the floor plate, it just chips off nice clean slices as long as i keep pushing the branches in. any ideas?

Your knives are sharpened incorrectly. They may have a sharp edge, but be rounded or have a shoulder.
Have them professionally sharpened to 45 degrees.

Sorry haven't visited in a LONG while. If it is an M-B Companies made chipper, they can provide what manuals they have to you for free. Just look them up on the net and make a phone call.

Best of luck.
