following an argument with my wife how fit do you guys consider you are?me personnally consider myself fairly fit.i climb nearly every day which involves using nearly every muscle in your body.if i'm not climbing i'm usually dragging brush and chipping.not really bothered what i'm doin' as long as the job get's done.
how fit do you guy's consider yourselves?

i can climb all day long just fine, but if i ran 100m i'd be shagged
questions isn't are you fit, but what are you fit for

i guess what i'm asking is about all round fitness.i spent 2 hours the other day stood on spikes ringing down a beech trunk with a sthill 084.this takes a fair amount of strength and stamina IMO.
what i'm asking is do you think that tree work makes you fit as it involves using almost all your muscles whilst in a tree.

Tree work makes you fit to make to do tree work. I could stand in hooks for 10 hours with the 84 but don't think I'd run a mile non stop. I can do one arm pull ups. I can do push ups with 150 pounds on my back but I am not fit or not in my opinion of fit.

I consider myself fit. I'm still lean and muscular but I don't run. I used to run marathons but I broke my hip parachuting and now I only run if I'm chased. I still swim a lot in the summer but I'm no longer 25. When compared to our peers, arborist are fitness nuts. Most of the guys I went to school with look like Budda.:D

So So

First of all,I'm 56 yrs old.I don't climb trees for a living.I can,and do rarely.I am,still a decent steel climber.I can still walk straight up an I beam, using the web[ old ironworker trick],and normally out work most 35 yr olds.I will admit,I am not the man I was in my prime.Nothing is forever.:(

I work out at a gym every day. Weights and Stairmaster. If my day/week is rough then I do weights one day, and Stairmaster the next. Everyday I do ab. work. I had a serious back injury a few years ago. My Chrio. said I had to.
I put it off and my back did not get any better. I did what he said and it helped.. a lot. Working out ads about another hour to my day. I believe that it relaxes muscles that get stressed from balancing and re-balancing climbing and draging throughout the day.
Plus you can take a shower there and not mess up the one at home.

That's great if you're into overtraining, and never giving your body a chance to recover. It will give you a skinny, muscular structure, and you'll need to eat a lot.

Not if you rotate the muscle groups you're exercising.

I'm straight up skinny, so anything on me is muscle. Especially since I haven't had any girls on me. :D I should work out, but I need to finish the semester and finish the move into our new building before I can justify putting that ahead of what I need to do.

I am blessed with good genes and I never used to work out!
39 and 40 around the corner so now I work out!
Nothing major but I don't climb 5 days a week anymore!:(
Damb Al 56 no sh...............t!

A muscle group needs six days to recover. And I know a lot of skinny guys that are really soft and fat. Nick, do you have the bicep vein? If so, I believe you about being muscular/skinny.

Your all the bicep veing ah Butch. What does that mean? I've got a big purple vien on my member what does that mean:p

Good genes

A lot to do with fitnes,is good genes,of which we have no control. When I built my shop,9 yrs ago,my father was 75 yrs old.Dad never had the lack of fear of heights, his sons have.Never the less,he would climb up in the steel, and help me place the sheets of metal roofing, that were 175 lbs.He is now,84 ,and of course not as fit,but still as active as possible.I will consider myself lucky, indeed,if I can so be.Part of it,I think,is the old adage,"use it,of lose it".I might also add, that,on both sides of the family, many have lived past 95,and were in relatively good health.

Yeah, Al?  The gene pool I'm from doesn't last that long, but we burn pretty bright and look good.  hahaha!

Careful TreeCo. Someone in ANSI or OSHA might get the idea that tree workers have to wear respirators so as not to inhale 2-stroke fumes while your working. Maybe it should be a part of the rest of the PPE. Yikes. It would be pretty tough smokin a nail with a respirator.

Blue, listen to your wife. We're ALWAYS right. :D Seriously though, if SHE brought it up, there may be something that you don't want to look at.

I'm not up in the tree working out, but get my fair share of physical activity down here. My doctor laughs at my muscles....I have more than him. BUT....it's the fitness that you can't see that may get you.

Even though you may be getting ALOT of excercise, it's important to make sure that some is aerobic. If you're accustomed to a set level...up it a bit. I walk BRISKLY in the mornings for 20-30 minutes....it seemed silly at first with all the other work I do...but if I miss it, I feel sluggish.

I told my husband years ago I was going to continue to cut the fat off the steaks I served him unless he got his cholesterol tested. Well that backfired, his was very low....BUT....it eased my mind anyways. (Now I just by lean cuts for the most part and don't worry about it)

Make sure you know your cholesterol levels (bad kind vs good kind) and your blood pressure tendancies. No matter how active you are or healthy you eat....if it's in your genes, you have choices now. My grandfather died at 42 from a heart attack....I'm planning on sticking around a bit longer.
