I am soon going to be piping up my logsplitter,I was wandering if pipe dope is sufficient on the fittings ,or if there is something special for a hyd. system. My general practice for iron fittings is tape and then dope;but I have heard not to use tape on hyd fittings; any insite on this would be appreciated. Chub

Most will tell you to stay away from tape. It is perfectly safe if properly applied. I use it on all my hydraulic stuff. Make sure you start back one thread and rape in the proper direction. Use 1/4" for most fittings or fold the 1/2" over so as to make a neat job. Actually using black iron pipe would be worse than worrying over the tape. The iron pipe can be rather dirty. A hydraulics shop can supply you with the proper fittings and tubing.

I have worked on dump trucks my whole life and have been taught to use teflon tape, but as stated in last post dont overdo it. You have to wrap it in the opposite direction of threads so it doesnt unravel when threading fittings together. I have heard of guys overdoing it with tape and plugging up filter. An older retired building maintainance mechanic just got hired to help out and he uses tape and pipe dope on all fittings. He seems sharp I will try it next time I work on hydraulics.
