My very helpful neighbor helped me take down a 90 foot spruce that was threatening my home. Well, HE climbed and cut it down. I pulled on the rope!

Anyway, someone borrowed his flip line and he never got it back. He's been tying off by using the end of his thicker rope, attaching to his saddle rig.

To thank him for cutting down my tree, I'd like to surprise him with a new flipline. From the little bit I know by reading online, a 2-in-1 is very safe. But also 3-times or more in price compared to a basic flip line. I am on a very limited budget.

Can a basic flip line be converted to a 2-in-1 at a later time? Any other helpful suggestions?

Thanks.

All you need is a 12' wire core flip line get it from bailey's or Sherriltree. He will require a cam and locker also. But hey on a brighter note that's all anyone used not long ago a stout piece of rope for trees and a leather strap for power poles.

Safety Lanyard Adjustable Double Braided Rope 10ft Length With Locking Snaps | A.M. Leonard, Inc.

this is a good inexpensive lanyard not requiring any extra hardware
i have one hanging on the wall of my garage i bought to do a quick job with once
its not got the cable core, so not quite as safe, but i climbed with one for years
the cable cored flip line previously mentioned is much nicer and what i currently use

10-ft Micrograb Maxi-Flip Flipline : SherrillTree Tree Care Equipment

plus carabiner (required)

the first one is fine for the occasional climber, works fine, just takes longer to use
a non adjustable, very long flip line could be converted into a 2 in 1, however in the mean time you have a lanyard thats too long and cant be adjusted
i dont know anyone who likes a 2 in 1
i have a buddy who makes his own lanyards

(requires carabiner)

or this and a clip

http://www.sherrilltree.com/1-2-Blue-Streak-Prusik-22-Steel-Snap

you could combine these products with a cable core lanyard at a future time

and he could make a nice lanyard

you definitely want to get him something adjustable in length
find out if he has the clips and carabiners, just make small talk or something if youre looking to surprise him
he likely has locking clips about and carabiners about, hed love you for a microcender, best dang thing since sliced bread

As far as a non-wire core flip line goes....I used to just make my own. All he should need is a couple of snaps and some 1/2 inch climbing line. He could make one easy enough. Or atleast one good enough for part time use. But its cool you wanna hook him up. Check into a "climb right" wire core w/lanyard adjuster. They are good enough and rather inexpensive (IMO)

Keep it simple get him a gift card to Sherrill or similar tree guy toy store and let him pick it out. A lanyard is kind of a personal preference type deal depending on his climbing style.

I was thinking the same thing. I've gone through all different varieties of flip lines and adjusters until I found one that I truly like. Unless the OP knows this climber's exact preference it might be hard to get him the one that he really wants or would use.
