Not easily. The cost of fixing damaged crank bearings from hitting the shaft with a hammer while you pry up on the flywheel with a couple screwdrivers is a LOT more than the cost of a cheap puller at the auto parts store.

Buy a puller.:p

To remove a flywheel without a puller can be done. My brother and I have removed about 100 this way and so far no problems.
1.Loosen the nut that holds the flywheel.
2.Put penetrating oil behind it so the shaft gets some and it can work into the area of the key and taper.
3.Let it soak over night to get into those tight places. Blow down onto it with air pressure, if you can, so the oil will be forced into the area you want.
4.Turn the flywheel to the spot opposite the magnets. The 288 has a flat spot here on the edge where there are no fins.
5.Hit that spot a solid wrap with a hammer (use a brass hammer if you have one). The taper on the shaft will force the flywheel off. Remember you are striking at 90 degrees to the shaft so it could break or bend (we have not had that problem, but be aware you could).
Mechanics have used this method for removing ball joints and tie rod ends on automibles for years. They use two hammers and put one on the opposite side to control the "squeeze".

Rupedoggy has it right, just a couple of additions. The saw must be able to move away from you when you hit it. I have a punch ground to a tapered point the fits down in the recess in the end of the crank. Saves splitting the crank end.

I've held the saw by the flywheel and given the crankshaft/unscrewed flywheel nut a good whack with a hammer. Almost always worked and I never damaged a crankshaft.

However, I made my own puller in five minues with the drill press and I'd never go back to beating the things to death. If you don't want to make one, MFG Supply has them for about $7.95.
