How many of you use foot plates on your spikes? I have tried several different kinds of boots and with the heavier shanked ones The upright nails me in the ankle. With the lighter boots the ankles are fine but my feet hurt when kicking in or standing on them.I'd imagine foot plates would solce my problem.

I keep one pair w Sherril plates on them permanently tack welded on them. They can fall off and get lost if bent a little otherwise. They are great on all day spike take downs. Besides for stabbing just standing on them is restful if no crotch is coming up soon.

How thick is the metal for the part you stand on? They look a little thin in the catalog.

David, They won t bend or flex. They are a little weighty but make up for that on an all dayer. Wouldn t use them every day by any means, and they take too much space in my climb gear oversized milk crate.

Another David

Also FYI, they ve got a thick rubber corragated bottom to them to prevent slippage. I ve had mine prob more than 20 years and it has worn of the toe a little.

I have a pair of Buckingham foot plates some where, tried them a few times and hated them.
Free to a good home, 1 pair of foot plates.

Ever try climbing boots? I have wore Wesco boots for yrs the are pricey about $400.00 but damn good boots and they last ,heavy shank and 16" tall def keps the leg iron from rubbing.Just bought a pair of RedDawg climbing boots from Baileys to try them out had them a cpl weeks now, leather might be stiffer than wescos, takes some breaking in but they seem like good boots, same design as the wescos but half the price

I have a pair of red dawgs from baileys. There the ones that the shank gets me in the ankle.I usually wear georgia bootsthey have a fairly heavy shank but apparently not heavy enough.

Ive got a pair of spikes that I originaly bought for a guy that worked for me (for 2 weeks) didnt use them for years untill I got tendonitis in my foot, so thought Id give them a try. They are made of red plastick and are big and have a hinged sole plate to them that you stand on and big pads. I do a lot of big take downs and I wouldnt go back to the old style. Ill check to see if I can find a brand name on them.......

David..I highly reccomend the Buckingham titanium climbers with the footplate and the thicker leg pads...All of a sudden last year my feet started killing me at the end of the day if I was in the tree with spikes. It almost felt like I had some kind of bone spur in the arch of my foot, and after I mildly fractured my foot back this winter it got even worse..So I went to Vermeer over in Simpsonville and bought that set-up..I've done many big trees since where I had to block them all the way down and I've had no problems at all

What the plates do that a good pair of steel shank boots don t is support your heels and pads below your toes. They are made w a little play to move w foot. They don t go all the way front and back to get in the way. It is almost like standing on the ground as far is your arches go.

I really didn't like them. I thought they would replace good boots, for me, no go. What I didn't like was that they didn't match the curve of the sole of the boot. Great support, yes, but very awkward feeling compared to good steel shank boots.

Do you find the foot plates slide on your feet and what kind of pads do you have on them?

I haven't had a problem with them sliding....I don't have pads on the footplates.I was talking about the thicker,wrap-around leg pads that go around the calf.
