I don't give 'super high bids' on trees I think are too risky, not wanting to give the impression that I'm overly expensive. I simply tell the potential client that the hazards the tree presents are more than what I am willing to expose my crew to. This doesn't happen a whole lot but when tree owners let their dead trees stand for so long that they are literally falling apart...and they need climbed and rigged to avoid property damage, I feel no shame at all in walking away. I do let them know to be sure to find an insured tree company...including workerman's comp, because I feel there is a high possibility of someone getting injured.

I give super high bids frequently. But when I bring in what I need to do a "risky" tree all the risk is about taken out of it. And we do them them safely.

thanks for the input fellas. i dont know what he bid it for but it wouldve been around 3k if it was my job. lol

i wouldve needed "all hands on deck" for this one beowulf. thats for sure.

JPS youre right. i wouldve been in an all out street fight with that tree if it was only that guy and i going after it. maybe if you add the guys who have taught me the most in this biz and had them running the rope, i wouldve done this tree, all day.

you are right yet again sir. the reward was not worth the risk yesterday.

maturation....i never thought i would live long enough to see it happen. lol.

The fact that the guy called you and tried to talk you into it, AFTER you had explained your reasoning to him, proves he's an ass. No doubt he's got big $$ on it. offer to work the ground for him!;)

he called me friday night to book for saturday and told me about the tree. i really dont care about the work sight unseen, as long as i am getting my loot. and not to cut this guy down or anything because we have taken down a couple good size tree's over a big money house in natick together. but i think his inexperience showed on this one when it came to his bid price and the tools/equipment/manpower needed to properly get the job done.

i like this guy so i dont want to berate him but he did admit to me that he never saw the guy wire when he bid the job.

and forget about me running the rope for him, he never wouldve been able to get to where he wouldve needed to be to set the rign. lol

tdunk your right.

AND.......hey scott(ASD) i am making a move to the west coast for a reason bud. i havent forgotten about your company. give me a season to get to see and work alaska. you for sure will hear from me. ive got good references!!!!!! lol

thanks guys, stay safe.

Yeah, I'm getting older too. I just recently looked at a 100' white pine 15' from a pool, beutifully landscaped pool area actually-tree was stone dead with bark falling off the tops, bark lifting at base, about half of the needles gone the rest brown. Tree was maybe 25' from the road and on a 15' hill that the pool area sat on, there was a white pine that was about 12 maybe 14" at base and 80' tall that had to go for the crane. So the road goes downgrade some and crane guy needs helper due to extra cribbing and the jib putting on, 1800-2000 just for crane. Now the plan is for me to go up 140-150' on the crane after taking out the spindly one, then hooking sling coming down and then tying into tree (bark falling off) cutting the vertical tops, (there are two its a wishbone deal) all that I can deal with but the thought that the tree could still break scared me. I hate white pine and I've killed many of its cousins so I know they got it on for me. The safest way really would have been two cranes in my opinion, second safest 100' spider lift and the crane. There was a huge residential company looking at it when we pulled up- I think they got a spider that big, not sure but if so good luck. I said 4500 and crossed my fingers that I did'nt get it. Oh, the reason it was so dead is because some other tree service big down that way put it off for quite a while- there was the ##### right there ! it would've been sweet with some life in it still. All that said I'm glad I didnt get it, my people like having me around for some reason I suppose. It PROBABLY would have been fine, its just who needs the stress and the what ifs, let the big guy have his day with the spider- hell he's gotta pay for it !! MDS
