What "If any" are the differences between the 394xp VS. 395XP model chainsaws?

My cutting partner is eyeballing an early model 394 (1997-vintage) on CL, and he asked my opinion on them.
I told him I've actually never run the 394.
The saw looks very well maintained & the Guy is asking $500, which sounds pretty reasonable to me

Were there any substantial problems with the 394 that prompted Husky to update the saw to the 395?

I'll do my best here.

The 394-395 has the same case I believe.

The crank and flywheels are different between the 2. The 394 has a square keyway on the crank stub, the 395 has the cast in place keyway in the flywheel.

The 395 is a quad port transfer cylinder, where as the 394 is a dual port transfer style.

The 395 has a rubber intake boot instead of plastic on the 394.

The 395 piston has 2 thin rings (1.2) . 394 has 2 thick rings (1.5)

I'm sure I probably left out a few things, but that's the most of it. Both are great saws IMO. Only problems I've really herd of with the 394 was vapor lock. The rubber intake on the 395 was supposed to fix the problem.

Check the muffler bolts and the muffler itself. That is what usually gives problems on them.

I've got a 394 from 96 and I run it mostly on my mill, havent had a problem yet, and I bought it used from a tree service who wasn't any nicer to it than I am. I hav loaned it out to friends who need a bigger saw on multiple occasions and it still keeps coming back for more. I only wish I had enough big wood to justify running it more. The only downside to it for me is the weight, compared to my 7900 it feels like an anchor. But in the back of my head I know that if it ever fails in a cut, I can just throw it at the tree and finish the job.:hmm3grin2orange:

Great Replies Guy's. This gives me some good info to go on!
Greatly appreciated. I like the last comment timcat...That's too funny!:hmm3grin2orange:

I am glad to read this--I don't know much about Huskvarna saws but I wondered about the 371XP: I have one that a friend gave me to tune up. What would it be worth? (20" b/c) ,a crack on the starter too; otherwise good cond. Anybody know??

Very Likely worth fixing the predecessor to the legendary 372. Lot's of Good things said about them here on A.S.
Resale value is dependant on many factors.
