Figured I would post this on a chain saw forum since the wife could care less. I just found a new small engine repair 10 minutes from home that services Stihl, Echo, Kohler, and Briggs. Saves me about a 45 minute ride to other dealer that I really was not happy with. Hate going to big box stores and searching all over for single item. Bought some two cycle mix for saws and oil filter for stumper at about same cost of big box without walking across huge parking lot and waiting on line with 17 other customers. I usually do my own repairs and it will be nice to have a local close by for parts. Hope they stick around.

Nearest Stihl dealer here is a 40 mile trip. Last week I ordered some parts for an old but loveable 024. I called Mr. Dealer this week and asked if the parts were in. He said, "Yes, they are in." I thought, "Oh goody!" and rode my bike down there only to discover that one of the parts is on backorder.

Of course if the dealer had TOLD ME one of the parts is on back order I would have waited until it came in and made one 40 mile trip instead of two 40 mile trips. When I said that, he remarked that he had only found the invoice that very minute -- whatever that meant.

Well, I looked around and saw the place was jammed with fancy canoes and kayaks and various hobby stuff and it dawned on me that the guy was juggling at least 3 different businesses and one is bound to suffer and become more of a sideline. Can't blame him for trying to make a living in these parts, but next time I might try another Stihl dealer about 20 miles north instead. This one is part of a hardware store and not canoes and hobby stuff. To the canoe guy's credit, however, his prices were less than I expected.

On the flip side I ordered some small tractor parts online from Mfg. Supply (couple hundred miles away) Tuesday morning and the Speedy Delivery truck rolled in with them 24 hours later right up to my doorstep!

Hey Max,

This canoe/stihl/other business wouldn't be in Trego, would it?

Yup.

Old Story: Indian standing by Namekagon shore watching timber floating downstream during logging drive sadly remarks: "Tree go. Tree go." Hence name.

... Saddened, and somewhat miffed (he knew the hinge was too thin on the right), he set out again on his quest for the perfect tree in which to make the finest canoe. This canoe was to be given his future father-in-law. As he made his way southwest, he found his prize. On the next hill, standing proudly among the poplars was the finest birch he ever laid eyes on. Relieved that his quest was finally over, he started up the steep slope towards the mighty tree. Reaching the crest, winded, he took in the scenery. Marveling as such a wonderful view, he laid his eyes on the finest body of water in all the land, "Balls, some lake," he muttered. He then carved his canoe, fished, and completely forgot about his upcoming wedding...

Balsam Lake is now a thriving little community and the county seat of Polk County, WI.

... And the moral of this story is...

;)

:p Good one!

The "Temperance River" empties into Lake Superior and was thus named by early copper prospectors because it was the only stream they encountered in their canoe travels up the North Shore that did not have a "bar" at its mouth.

Ah, man... you snagged the last name "lore" I can remember. Trego and Balsam Lake I know from just growing up in that neighborhood... the Temperance one I heard only because I worked a short while in Beaver Bay and Two Harbors (just was at Grandma's Marathon... nice to see the beautiful country again).

I'm going to have to start diggin'...

Hope your back is better.
