These ads are getting old, in here. I know they're brought up for comic relief, but I found, by contacting some of the CL posters, that they actually do succeed in getting free tree work from people who want the wood, for whatever reasons. We can make fun of them, but the joke is on us, isn't it?

There was one ad that I saw (and didn't post in here) from a woman who was charging for the privilege of taking down a scrawny walnut she had. When I contacted her, she let me know the tree was already gone!

Anyway----If it gives you guys a laugh to post these ads, so be it. Again, I must wonder who the joke is really on.

It ticks me off that people accually have the b@lls to post stuff that and it does tick me off that these firewood vultures gobble it up without thinking twice about it. But i look at it this way, if the people are that cheap and they did call me to give them a price on removing a tree, they probably wouldn't pay me what i wanted anyways, or even if they did they'd want every last saw chip removed before they'd pay and gripe about it they whole time about how i'm ripping them off.

About 20 min. from me a guy had a "free firewood" sign in his front yard. Since one of my groundies burns wood we stopped. He had a forked maple, one side was completely dead and had broken off and was leaning into the other fork, witch was leaning over his house. So we left. We drive by a couple days later, there's the tree......... smashed through his sun porch. I'll bet ya he thinks twice about letting "ax man Bubba" with no insurance cutting so close to his house.

I know I know. But 175 for a pick-up load of box elder? " You can have my tree" and its a deathtrap?
I said there was a market for this AND if I wasn't wheelin and dealin in logs myself... Yeah, the mortal man would pay for the oppurtunity to run his wildthing into some real " man-work".
" Don't let em fool ya"
B. Marley.
Its not as nice as you might think. I like to browse CL, everybody does, I always come across disasters caused by people who tried to get there before you.
I was looking at this shed for free, I went to look at it and told the guy no problem, it won't be mess.
He called me a couple of days before I had the roll-back scheduled to tell me someone destroyed it trying to get it into a beat up Caddy.
But you should see the 10x14 I picked up for 250.00... delivered! How about the kids club house? That went on a trailer real easy. 200 dollar york rake?
And Yeah, there are the scrappers. Man, think about all the cool stuff you could get if you did that. I snagged a moped of a scrap truck once , found the hot wire, and started burning out.
You know also there is this that just happen:
My green outback was just totaled, I saw the same car on CL ( 02 outback wagon, dark green, lots of sex appeal, no joke) so I emailed the guy. The next day he pulls into my driveway with my car back. He is a wholesaler and he uses CL to sell his cars. I loved it, I didn't have to leave the house, I didn't have to put up with a dealer salesman, i din't even have to look more than a day and I got the exact same car and that is exactly what I wanted. Thanks CL.
I have asked a few people who post things like " free tree" to let me know how it went, I haven't heard back. But your situation is not really like anyone else's, so there could be some bowl turning freak out there sucking up all this black walnut. It does not always end well, rest assured.

Hell, if I saw some oak close to home I would snake it. about those " free wood " signs, if its not good wood don't take it. You could take a pic so we can all really start hurting ourselfs laughing, right now I am just mildly heaving. Glad nobody got hurt and I have seen some regular guys in some unregular spots... dey, was cryinnnn, sobbing. I felt bad.

I am happy to read these listings and laugh. Then hope that all goes well with the removal. People are desperate for cheap heat and many people know that. The work is worth what someone is willing to pay. Free market and all that. If someone is so desperate for wood, they may be willing to pay to take a tree. Pay $50 for a cord of wood, not a bad deal for some.

Tree guys get mad at firewood guys, but we're all just looking to stay warm and provide for our families. Nothing wrong with that.

If I paid the prices you charge, I would expect the saw chips to be cleaned up.
:)
These firewood vultures are something aren't they.

Supply and demand is kinda tough, theres a lot of prima donna's that are going to have to realize that times are getting tough and they cant stick it to the homeowners quite as easily as they once did, as long as jose and his wild thing are on the prowl. I dont have a problem with free firewood, it's the dangerous jobs that worry me, but then Darwin will step in and thin the herd.

:chainsaw:

What is so dam funny? I will tell you. I landed my very first job in the tree biz cause I called to see if they wanted to buy some firewood from me. Hell, what did I know, I spent the day with my bowsaw cutting up fallen poplar trunks and thought it was something worth sharing. I was about 19.
When I called the tree guy about some wood he said " no thanks" so I said " well, how about a job?" I think I got the short end of the stick on that one!
About 20 years later I deem myself "Arborist of the Freaking Year!" Oh god I am dying cause its ALL so true.
I do some crazy things for some fire wood. Heave ho, lets GO! Right now my house is completly open cause of the oil spill, I am coming to you outta Chester, co pa and its a balmy 82 in my gutted out concrete basement.

Never thought it would happen but I got a call for this very thing today "Hi, do you guys cut trees down for free if I give you the firewood" I wanted to laugh in her face, but I gave her the whole insurance, equipment, overhead speech. I think I at least sold her on felling the tree and chipping the top...who knows though.

When times were easier, I would just get a bunch of wood dropped off at the house from the local tree services. (I happen to live off a highway where the DMV cops are especially bullish) so everyone likes to ride "light" through this area too... So the difference is I give the tree service $100 for a full truck, and I give the driver a 20. For that I get nothing but great firewood, sitting in my yard. Works out to about 2 cords per load. It's a good deal all the way around.

I maintain forests, not yards. The "free tree" ads are getting a little old around here too. But there are still alot of people paying around these parts. We just haven't had a wind or ice storm in about 3 years, so people haven't kept up with tree maintenence. We'll see what this winter brings.
