Hey guys I have followed more than one posts on fuel and fuel mix ratio's but I have settled into a mix around 40-45:1 on my saws. My question is, how much RPM do ya give up with a heavy mix?? Do you loose any?? I recently rebuilt a Husky 55 for a friend and ran the first tank at 32:1 his cylinder had two mild exhaust port scratches I honed out. The saw blubbered and sputterd with the whole tank. tried smoothing it out with carb adjustment and did gain some ground. After that first tank I put my lighter mix and readjusted the carb and everything was fine. I guess my question is can you lean out a saw at 32:1 and still expect the same performance as if it is running at 50:1?? Or do we sacrafic good lubercation for performance?? thanks the Hoosier

Sharpen your chains it's a jungle out there!!

Hi John
I`ll probably be speaking out my butt in the technical aspect, but since the mix oil has more btus of energy per volume, mixing at a lower ratio should have no ill effect on performance in the ranges you are speaking of.

In practical terms I have not been able to discern any performance loss running all of my saws at 40:1, first on Husky black bottle(XP) oil and now exclusively on Mobil MX2T.

I suspect that the poor performance you noted was probably due to low compression until the rings seated. If you truly honed the cylinder enough to remove scratches you have obviously increased the bore diameter some small amount. While not a big deal, it must have some effect on ring tension and compression.

I`m curious to see what anyone else offers.

Sorry about my absenteeism lately, but I was at a party last night and was the only one invited.
Anyway, there are to many other ways to get performance out of our saws than to be worried about mix. Mixes thinner than 40:1
should be run richer on the H, which basicly gives a richer mix.
Mixes thicker than 40:1 can obviously be run leaner on the H with less fear of a lean seizure. Running thick mixes and rich settings accomplishes nothing, so as we can see, it all comes down to an air, fuel, oil thing.

Hi, Everyone.

I'm somewhat new to this site. A while ago someone posted a link to the Mobil oil site where you could order MX2T on line. I've gone through some of the various postings and cannot find it. I went to Mobil.com and found 3 listings of dealers who sell Mobil 1, in this area, but none stock the MX2T oil and apparently don't plan on getting it in. So if someone could post the link again, I would appreciate it, Thanks. Lewis.

Thanks, shooter.

Thanks, shooter, for the link. I've written it down this time and thanks for listing the thread. I found it interesting and will revisit it. Lewis.

Hi Lewis
Don`t you have an Auto Zone up there in Oburg or Potsdam? They would have the MX2T and it`s only $3.59/pint here.

Roger,
Is this the song your talking about.

Some putz at my gas station saw my buying super. He asked what is was for I explained chainsaw. He went on to tell me he has been landscraping for 23 years and all he burns is 50 to 1. AHH

He also said how he gets 2 years out of most of his 2 cycles. I am running 32/1 in everything and don't seem to get any problems. I burned 2 gal of gas in my Henry 357 today. The wind Kicked the hell out of the trees.

ROSIE

She was standing at the load-in
When the trucks rolled up
She was sniffing all around
Like a half grown female pup
She wasn't hard to talk to
Looked like she had nowhere to go
So I gave her my pass
So she could get in and see the show

Well I sat her down right next to me
And I got her a beer
While I mixed that sound on stage
So the band could hear
The more I watched her watch them play
The less I could think of to say
And when they walked off stage
The drummer swept that girl away

But Rosie you're all right -- you wear my ring
When you hold me tight -- Rosie that's my thing
When you turn out the light -- I've got to hand it to me
Looks like it's me and you again tonight Rosie

Well I guess I might have known from the start
She'd come for a star
Might have told my imagination not to run too far
Of all the times that I've been burned
By now you'd think I'd have learned
That it's who you look like
Not who you are

But Rosie you're all right -- you wear my ring
When you hold me tight -- Rosie that's my thing
When you turn out the light -- I've got to hand it to me
Looks like it's me and you again tonight Rosie

Aftre learning about this site I switched over to 32:
1 Maxim K2 on all my saws. I double checked the rpm on all of them and they were fine. They performed fine too. On the other hand my Shindaiwa 357 top handle when set for 32:1 runs good, try to run 50:1 at that setting it runs terrible. Some saws are more finicky I guess!

which oil... and what ratio...

There are many posts on this very subject- check the archives and you will see...

I run all my stuff 40:1 on Belray MC1 syntetic 93 octane pump gas

All the major manufaturers sell oil which is obviosly not bottled or mixed by them- they just sell it. The Husqvarna xp oil in the black bottles is actually made by Castrol I believe. As Jokers says its a good oil and I never seen any problems with using it- but I never have been sold on the 50:1 idea... so I go 40:1

I actually think that the best oils for 2 stroke air cooled engines have been developed for dirt bikes and if you go to a bike shop you will find a good selection of syntetic oils which are not that much more than the OEM chainsaw oils but are much better.

Another thing to think about is that when you go to fill up your 1 gallon can at the pump and you select "premium" the guy before you probably got regular and you'll have to purge the pump lines of the lower grade fuel. I just stick it in my vehicle and let it fill the tank on it 1st and then I fill the can. That way I'm pretty sure that the pipes and hoses have been purged out of the questionable fuel. Just something else to think about...

"dike bikes"

Sooo, Jeff, are we refering to the riders in the powder puff races that have truckers wallets with a chain hanging out their back jeans pockets?

No jokers, No Autozone.

About all we have here is: Napa, Walmart, Advanced Auto and 2 Mobil gas stations that should have MX2T but don't seem to want to carry it. Advanced Auto is supposed to be a distributer for Mobil 1 which they carry. Talked to the guys in the store, about MX2T, and they said they never had a call for it and I got the impressiln that they were not about to order or carry it. Dirt biking is almost nonexistant here. I use Mobil 1 in everything I have that's 4 cycle. My truck, car, my Generac generator and all lawn epuipmint,, etc. I was thinking of using MX2T in all my 2 cycle equipment at a 32:1 mix. My Poulan 3400 calls for 16:1, my small Toro rototiller 40:1 and my green Weedeater and Ryan weedeater I run 32:1 and can't forget the old Disston at 16:1, if and when I get it to fire up and hopefully run. I was thinking of going to MX2T and going to 32:1 mix for everything. I only go through about 4 gallons of 2 cycle mix a year. I'm not a big chainsaw user. The Poulan has only cut about 5 cord of wood and trimmed a few branches around the house and has never seen a wrench. Never have pulled the spark plug and only have touched up the chain twice. The Disston I've had for years, was given to me in a couple of boxes and I have been putting it together and tinkering with it to see if I can get it running. A sort of hobby. OK, I've rambled on enough, just figured that if MX2T was available I'd start using it. Never figured it would be so hard to obtain. Checked out the link and they don't give it away either, then you add in the shipping. Guess I'll have to keep looking. It's getting late and will talk to you later. Lewis.

That`s a good point about purging the fuel hose on a single hose pump. Just wondering, how does filling your tank with the purge gas work with the Duramax? Does it cause a loss of power, LOL.

Lewis
I`d gladly ship you less than a case quantity for nothing more than it actually costs me + shipping. I`m guessing that you would still need to buy about a half case quantity to make the price/pint reasonable. How about sled shops up your way? Maybe they would have some good aircooled two stroke oil. I realize that most Hi-Po sleds are liquids but you never know until you check it out. You probably don`t travel down toward Watertown do you? Might be able to get some there.

Hi, jokers.

I have called a couple of motorcycle shops, a larger shainsaw repaire shop and snowmobile shops to see what they have, no luck. I think I'll email my wife's relitives in Syracuse and see if, mabe, they can find some and pick up some for me. I have to go to Syracuse to see my eye Dr. in Jan. so that will give them a chance to locate some. I don't get out much anymore, have been declared legally blind now for 2 years and can't drive. I still can do pretty much what I want to do, just takes me longer. Usually if I want or need something, I'll call around or search the internet, to see what's available and go from there. Thanks for the offer, but no hurry. I mixed up some fresh gas-oil mix a few days ago, for use this fall and winter. But I'll still look around to see what's availible. You take care, Thanks, Lewis.
