I was in picking up some new chain and taking care of a sick 260 when my dealer showed me one of the oddest things I have ever seen.

Our logging team has certificates for two small saws, a 280 and a 290. We are looking to get a good saw for harvest and have taken these certificats to this dealer to see what he can do.

He ordered in a wrap handle 441 with a 28" bar. Dang was that a goofy looking thing!

The wrap was almost twice as far away from the clutch cover as my 440. With the springs and stuff exposed it looked almost like a toy. With the 28" bar on it, the saw felt akward as all get out to me.

Anyone put their hands on one of these yet? I thought there was a significant girth difference flush cut to flush cut. It looks even bigger with the wrap.

Yah, I was at the local shop here and looked at the 441 with a 32" bar and double dogs and 'full wrap' (really a 3/4 wrap, but Stihl calls it a full wrap). Springey, odd and fat. But smoooooooooth. $850 as it sat. I have been seriously looking at the 441 for a while now, after running a 460 that was just too hard on my hands (vibration).

The 441 has been discussed on a lot of threads on AS lately, and the 440 is finally going away this year. Supposedly for very long time now it has been on the block to be end of lifed. The 440 and 441 seem to have some odd sales activity. Some places the 441 is selling great. At others the 440 is still selling great. At the local shop they have not sold a 441 yet, while selling several 440's. The local pros want the old tried and true.

The 361 and 441 are the wave of the Stihl future. In the UK and Europe thay are pushing anti-vibration laws. In the US they are pushing laws for better fuel consumption, quieter and less smoggy saws. That is what is driving these new saw designs.

I personally like the smoothness of the newer saws alot, but got to say when I was at a dealer and saw a 440 and 441 side by side for the first time, I was really struck with what a more compact package the 440 was. So much narrower. I can see why many just don't want to give them up.

But for me the 440, 460 and 660 bother my hands after a while and my next Stihl will be either a 441 or 461 if they aren't much heavier. I have kept my 066 because it is a classic workhorse, but if it were to get stolen I wouldn't replace it. Blasphemy on AS, I know, but I can run my 395 all day with no hand problems at all.

This one was tagged at 790 with a 28.

My 440 works me pretty decent, definitely feel it, but not as bad as the 650.

There has been a lot of talk about this saw, I know, but I haven't seen a commentary on the giant, bulbous 3/4 wrap.

That goofy looking thing is 4 out of 5 of the 441 sales in this area.

Lakeside, have you guys had any performance issues/failures with the 441 yet? we sold a couple to a logging company and apparently they're having trouble with one. I haven't seen it yet but they're bringing it into the shop Monday.

Do you mean flush cut hadlebars, or flush cut on a stump? I can't imagine a logger worrying about a flush cut stump.

Give a quick search here on AS for "441" and you'll get some reading. Skip the "Prince of Saws" thread.

I mean models, the flush cut to flush cut as compared to wrap to wrap since there is a clarity issue with how full the Stihl wrap is.

I mean the big booty is apparent, as has been discussed. With the 3/4 wrap, even compared to other 3/4 wrap saws, it is HUGE!

Well, in the days of my youth here in Orygun, a full wrap Mac WAS HUGE. I mean big ol' honkin' monsters. Heavy too.

To me the 441 does not look or feel that weird from the size of the 3/4 (Stihl 'full') wraps. I think they look cool, and they feel good shifting them from side to side. Only comparing it to the 440 do I get the feeling that it is a wide body. The spring suspension on it does make it look and feel like you are sawing with a spring suspension rocking horse. Yes, that isolates you from the feel of the saw, which some sawyers do not seem to like. But that is the idea, lest you get white finger or tendonitis or arthritis.

779 for a 441 flush cut for us and other dealers in our area here but a wrap handle is almost unheard of around here. I just logged on and we can't even get the wrap in our area. I did find something interesting though, as there is now a part number for an MS441 CQ. Looks like there will now be an optional version with the additional secondary brake like the 361 has for an option.

We had one that came back next day, but it was just a minor carb adjust issue. The overall response is very good - some uncertainty at first, but we've now had many repeat sales.

I dont notice it being particuarly larger than any other wrap... Looks about the same as the 460 and the 440 wrap to me.

But for me the 440, 460 and 660 bother my hands after a while .....

Ultra doesn't have that problem, if he get tiered of using one 660, he can just start up another one, and start from fresh, and repeat as necessary........

...looks like he is building a single model saw collection.......:rockn:
