full wrap or half wrap? that is the Question

Chad,

I'd guess the question pertains to chainsaw front handle configuration.

I don't have an opinion in the matter other than to say it could seem a benefit to have the full wrap handle when stuck in one position making a felling (or equivalent) cut.

I've had one saw with a full-wrap handle, and I didn't find it advantageous for my cutting situations. In fact, the thing annoyed the hell out of me because it would not stay level when placed on its side for fueling.

I prefer half wrap handles. I DO see the advantages of a full wrap for logging operations. (and, Yes I own both configurations) For typical tree care operations the full wrap gets in the way more than it helps (IMNTBHO).

The 066 amd 044 mags...gotta have full wrap for me, falling sticks on ground that can be awfully steep here in the Cascades. When you are limbing the stick once it's on the groung walking down the log in your caulk boots, you are far better able to rotate the saw without placing your wrists in a bind and provide better control. Smaller saws are ok with half wrap, but they always seem "domesticated" to me in that configuration since I am so used to the other. In the tree, again I like the full wrap for anything but my little pruning saws, since it gives me better options on where I locate myself. It is certainly true that the full wrap can sometimes sure get in the way when you are wanting to work with the saw body close up against something.

oh, this question was about chainsaws?

Okay, so I was thinking that this questions was regarding use of the Portawrap! Since that's what I was thinking, here's my response. I prefer to use 1/2, 1.5, or 2.5 wraps. I like to finish coming off the bottom. I keep the PW low on the tree. If you come off the top, sometimes the top pin will let the rope pop off, causing you to lose 1/2 a wrap. If you are holding it at belly level and the PW is just below that, it stays on better (you're less likely to lose a wrap) when loaded.

And keep it on the ground. Every now and then it might be worth it in the tree, but really, who wants to carry that thing around with them while climbing!

I prefer half wrap for ease of flushing stumps. The guys at the Mehama(logging town) saw shop thought I was nuts ordering a half wrap on a 3120:D.

That was great, Nickfrom.  The original question never has been clarified yet.
