Today I finally got around to a project I've been meaning to do for the last couple of years. I made space in the backyard and deck for a little more wood so I could get rid of two face-cord-size racks around the side of the garage. That spot is between the houses, never gets any sunlight, not a lot of airflow, not very accessible in winter because of snow; plus which it looked kind of crummy, and my neighbor is trying to sell her house. So I moved the remaining wood to the backyard.

Anyway, I had just finished that, and was just about to start breaking down the racks to reclaim the 4x4s, when two guys with a big pickup pulling a utility trailer full of firewood drove by, saw me standing by the empty racks, and backed up. "You interested in some firewood for this winter?" I told them, "Oh, no thanks, I've got about two full cords stacked in the backyard." I could see them looking past me at the empty racks. "You sure? We can give you a really good price." "Thanks, but no; I'm set for a while." "Okay, then." And they drove off.

They probably thought that a) I was blowing smoke, because of the empty racks, and b) I was a typical clueless suburbanite who doesn't know the difference between a face cord and a full cord. Nobody in my neighborhood but me has two cords of wood, so it would be a fair assumption, actually. But it was funny to have that happen literally three minutes after I'd emptied those racks and finished my winter stacking. Just the right moment to make me look like a liar. 15 minutes earlier and they'd have seen me moving wood; 15 minutes later and the racks would have been down.

Their wood looked pretty nice at a glance, and it was all stacked neatly in the trailer, so they looked like they were on the up and up. I hope they had a good day.

A little sun and breeze make a huge difference. I'm sure your neighbor appreciated the effort as well.
I cleared some Poplar last fall/spring. Cut/split/stacked (uncovered) a cord and a half behind the wood shed. I gave it all away yesterday, as it was damp, moldy and getting punky for lack of sun. Guy picked it up for his outdoor boiler.

No doubt. Wood will season in that spot, it just takes longer. It seemed like a convenient place when I first moved into the house, but that's before I started processing my own firewood.

next time call their bluff and say $20......and see what happens

Did they actually ever give you a price? Never know they could of been giving it away? I would've asked, could of had a wife at home telling them to clean up the yard and get rid of it.

Yes timing is a weird thing sometimes. I think about it once in a while. Personally I like the look of a row of stacked firewood. Most others that don't process, burn or care usually think it look messy. Wife and I were recently on week-long holiday and drove up through Quebec's Laurentian mountains and almost every place we saw had huge stacks of firewood nearby. I was just like,"Hun, look at that stack!...hun look at that one!" She got tired of it real fast I bet but I was so excited to see all the stacks of wood that I almost wanted to stop at every place and chat them up a bit...ha,ha.
