Ok.... very simple. As far as the chipper application...Gas or Disiel?

Pros..
Cons?

I agree, but...

In some areas gas is more readily available than diesel. Hence, my choice here is gas equipment.

gas here also, fuel is more available here, and you can go to any napa and have it up again, verses ordering parts in for some unheard of diesel model # if the parts stores or equipment dealer has any info on your particular engine. Dirt ingestion and air filtration isn't as big a problem on gas either.

Good input guys. I think deisel would hold up better and have that better torque. But I hear that break downs and repair are very $$. What about winter starting?

I ask because I am thinking of buying a bandit 250 with a strong stright 6 gas, very low hours. I always said my next chipper would be deisel. As long as gas goes down I think I will be ok

Gas here on Cape cod is still $205.00 per of regular.

Rocky, what is gas in the South thses days??

It is hard to argue against Deisel-since they get better fuel economy. Have greater torque in general and the engines generally have greater service life. When buying used with limited funds you take what you can get. The plus side of gas on a used machine is that the gas engines are relatively cheap to repair or even rebuild. Diesels are horribly expensive to have work performed on. I tow a gas chipper behind my diesel truck.

I would stay with diesel but thats just me, properly maintained a diesel engine will run forever, but proper maintenence can take a bit of time and is a few bucks more than the same on a gas engine.

The diesel engines have the power and torque that you want in that machine. Over here, cheapest regular gas is $2.199. Go about half an hour north and you will find it for $2.139. Diesel though, is $1.899 That's a nice amount of money saved in fuel over time.

Absolutely.

But if he can get a good deal on a gas powered unit, why not?

Diesel, for the reasons mentioned.

Also depends on your tax system. Here, diesel for road use is taxed, and costs us around £0.80 per litre (£3.64 / gal). Diesel for non road use ie plant, tractors that don't use public roads etc.is only £0.35 / litre. There's no such concession for petrol. You have to pay the duty whatever you use the petrol for. You pay around £0.79 / l (and rising) whatever.

The same tax structure exists in Canada for diesel and gasoline. Fuel consumption per hour to do the same work will also be much less with diesel.
All the initial costst and maintenance issues mentioned for diesel are valid, but long term cost per hour is eventually much less. If you are in a position of making savings or investments, invest in diesel; it will pay good dividends. If you are cash flow challenged, gas might be the best route.

It's about like a laser printer vs. inkjet.  Higher initial costs, but per-page goes way down over time.

diesil is best. like was said with proper maitinace it will last forever, the same cant be said for gas. by the way guys whats with the avitars:rolleyes:

deisel deisel deisel everytime !!! once youv'e owned a truck or chipper or whatever you'll never want a gas engine again..diesels last longer, preform better, and are a whole lot cheaper to run ..the down side is if they brake down as you have said repairs /parts cost a bomb but how often do they brake down imo very very rarely..my father had a 40 year old deisel tractor that would start easy winter or summer

overhere in the UK and Europe we use deisels all the time from tractors to mercedes benz cars ;)

i cant even think of a gas powered chipper for sale in the UK.the only one ive ever used was a old DOSCO we had for a while when we snapped the crank in a BANDIT

diesil's are the way to go. 25 gallons of fuel in a chipper go a long way, saves time when its fuel up day. add what you would spend with gas and then with diesil fuel. over time, any box of rocks would understand where the savings are. i'm wish i could switch my gas truck to diesil but there are still three more years of payments on it.

my chippers petrol only difference is choking it in the morning! diesels arnt any cheaper in the scheme of things, definently dearer at re-build time, ford 6 in mine 107 hp 2 days chipping on 50 litres, runs at 2300rpm does it easy.japanese truck with 100 hp towing an american chipper with 107hp:rolleyes:

overhere we can use subserdised deisel in PLANT ie diggers chippers tractors..its called red diesel ,you cant use it in cars though and its 35 pence a litre compared to 82 pence for road use,so it definatly pays to have deisel overhere..by the way we cant get cheap petrol
