I was doing a removal today and looked over at my lifeline going to my overhead TIP and noticed a nick in it across from me. It wasn't bad, but I'll retire it as a lifeline anyway.

Then when I got down , I was looking at the rest of my gear and noticed the Tenex eye to eye that I use as a lanyard adjuster looked worn pretty bad,
and so did the Ice eye to eye that I tie my climbing hitch (Distel) with.

The safety rope is about 6 months old and the eye to eyes are a month old.

That's going to be about 265.00 to replace everything... Ouch !

1) How long do you guys get on the average out of your safety rope and your eye to eyes ?

2) Do you just replace stuff as it gets wore out and eat the cost ?
Or do you budget XX amount per month for spares and replacements ?

And how much climbing gear spares or back up do you keep on hand ?

Not meant to flame, but the time to check that stuff is before you get in the air, not after the climb. Back to topic, gear will last depending on the amount of use, how it is treated on the job site, and how it is stored. Seen more climbing lines damaged by an errant pole or hand saw in the back of a truck to know to keep them far away from each other. Replace the items as needed and always keep some extras around. As for cost I believe I am worth it, so it doesn't matter. :)

I hear ya DT, I check all my rigging gear at the end of the day as I put it up,
and keep all my ropes in bluewater rope bags. Separate from all the sharps.

I'm picky with the safety gear but this one caught me by surprise.

What I'm wondering though, is how long , on the average someone who climbs and uses their gear everyday gets out of these items.

And yeah, no matter what the cost...
It's worth it !

If I'm careful, I will use my rope for 1 year. Even then it's gonna have some knicks. The eye to eye I use about 6 months, but I had one that lasted for only 2 weeks. It was one of the technora's, had a small rouugh spot on it when tying, by middle of the climb the cover was disinegrating. I switched to bee line after.
